Reviewed by: Emmial C. Fields, Music Correspondent

Back To Now is one of those CD's that you buy and take with you on a surprise visit to your folks, sit around and be candid with each other over a couple of games of cards with a few cousins and vittles at the dining room table. Talk about the good old days and inform them of the new.

A bridge-the-gap CD like Back To Now has the power to get our families talking again, and actually enjoying it. Try it out, what could you lose? An evening out of your life with your family that might be overdue anyway.

Labelle is still scorching, ladies and gentlemen!!! Back To Now has been missing on the music scene long before its release. The lyrics are spontaneously thoughtful, imaginative, and theatrical. Production and music authentically paint elaborate stage sceneries that seem to come to life and perform with the ladies. The vocals of Back To Now blend like listening to three sisters talk and finish each other's sentences instantly changing the perspective of the stories.

Nona Hendricks, Patti LaBelle, and Sarah Dash are not three Divas fighting for the spotlight, they give you full harmony with appropriately placed attitude and emotion. All key elements that make this reminiscently modern release so much more enjoyable than the heavily engineered and produced groups hitting the airwaves. This music has purpose, heart, and most of all ... soul!!

By Emmial C. Fields, Music Correspondent

Something Else is a wonderful follow-up to the Robin Thicke's 2007 release, The Evolution of Robin Thicke. By now we all know that Robin is the son of Alan Thicke, star of the hit comedy "Growing Pains." Well don't hold that against him, because this handsome soul stirrer isn't playing his father's music.

I especially commend
Robin on the instrumentation
used on this album.

Real saxophones and horns
and real baselines plucked
to perfection.

Can you tell I have missed the full band sound in music these days? There are times when I have listened to this CD and felt like I was at a live concert. Robin Thicke exhibits such exquisite composing and writing abilities on each track.

This "Brotha" (yes I said it), is bearing it all for us to know who he is and how bad he is wanting his music to be heard and understood. Something Else has that old-school feel with a bit of something new for the youngsters to get with.

Like a good novel, Something Else caught my attention in the first four songs with its Marvin Gaye meets McFadden and Whitehead sound. Easy flowing rhythms with light strings accompanied by the soulful falsetto breeze of Robin's voice on the tracks, "You're My Baby" and "Ms. Harmony," feel like walking barefoot on new plush carpet.

The albums first single "Magic," is a moving discoesque track that gets the shoulders and hips moving to its beat. Don't be shocked if you find yourself smiling while you dance around your living room or in your car, that is what Something Else is all about. I know that I can be a bit biased at times, so I tried this one out with a group of older friends and then a group and younger friends and the end result was the same.

We all had a really good time talking and there were smiles all around the room those that were in love smooched during the ballads while others were reminiscing and dancing on the uptempo tracks. I guess I spent too much time working in a laboratory, I'm experimenting on my friends now.

One track that really caught my attention and made me think and sometimes put my head down in shame, was the last track, "Tie My Hands." This collaboration of Lil Wayne and Robin Thicke was so well meshed that one can not help but get the overall message in the song. I have such a respect for Lil Wayne now.

There is no flash in this song or unnecessary carrying on, just and well-laid background with much food for thought. I am not one to get too caught up in political discussions, because there are too many opinions clouding up the truth.

I will say that if you are going to vote for our next President (which I recommend doing no matter which side you are voting for), take a listen to this song. "Tie My Hands" gives the perspective of a public figure who had to deal with the tragedy of New Orleans and fall-out that resulted.

About a month ago, I awakened to the sound of my television spewing out unfamiliar music. As I managed to become a human being again my attention was drawn to the TV screen, and this blonde bombshell sitting in the back seat of what looked like a taxi singing about when she gets to Warwick Avenue.

Finally, the much anticipated release of Jennifer Hudson's self-titled CD is here. I must say that I am Em-pressed (a word coined by my good friend Steven Lewis when he liked the work I choreographed for him)!!! This album is an In-Your-Face American Idol episode that will be giving Simon Cowell nightmares for years to come.

Seriously, Jennifer shows that she can balance her voice with story-line and emotion on every recording in every style on this CD. Jennifer sings so comfortably on every song that you would think that this was her fourth or fifth release.

I would not be surprised if words like Diva and Superstar are quickly attached to her name in the not so distant future. I got chills so many times listening to the strength and power on Jennifer Hudson that I thought I was coming down with the flu. God I love when music makes me feel this good.

It's definitely a mood shifting song with a strengthening message.

Jennifer rocks the duets and works so well with each artists she sings with. Two of my absolute favorite collaborations are those with Hip-Hop artist Ludacris and 2004 American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino.

Now Ladies if you didn't know before your pocketbook is not just an accessory, but a weapon as well, according to Jennifer in "Pocketbook." "Pocketbook" is a light-hearted cute song with a beat box-like rhythm that carries a message of self-respect.

Two snaps up to Missy Elliot, Fantasia Barrino, and all others involved it the obviously well-crafted "Jenni from the Hood" old soul sounding future classic, "I'm His Only Woman." Y'all better get out of her way, because Jennifer Hudson is coming through and she is not taking prisoners.

She is just taking every award that is due to her and I smell a Grammy or two and even an American Music Award for this young Diva (see what I mean).

Welcome this rising star, elodieO, to your music collection and the music industry. I think she's going to be around for a while. Though this beautiful songstress was born in Paris, elodieO is a regular to the New York scenery, and it is no wonder.

The creative style in which she sings, arranges, and composes most of the songs on Stubborn is reflective of such beauty. Stubborn is a collection of sophisticated, lightly textured vocals that are smoothed over electronic-pop rhythms and ambient instrumentation.

This delightful collection is just what the doctor ordered to test out that new sound system providing a non-intrusive variety of syncopated beats that do not overshadow elodieO's delicately accented voice.

Sensuality oozes from elodieO's mouth into your ears on the tracks, "Crazy," "Take The Best," and "L'attente."
I have found my new Best Friend in Ms. Lalah Hathaway! After listening to Lalah Hathaway's fifth musical release, Self Portrait, I must say that I absolutely love every track. The young Lady has blossomed into a beautiful Goddess of Music and I am very proud of her musical and artistic growth.

This former student of Berklee College of Music had a hand in writing every song on this compilation, making every palatable chapter of Lalah's life believable, multi-dimensional, and a true Self Portrait.

Lalah's writing and musical collaborations with Rex Rideout, Kenneth Crouch, Michael Ripoll, Sandra St. Victor, Rahsaan Patterson, and several other talented artists, gives each song the perfect ingredients for all to enjoy.

After working with so many great artists in the span of her career, it is evident that Lalah has been taking very good notes.

Lalah acoustically uplifts you on, "Breathe." She becomes a catalyst for thought with the song "Tragic Inevitability."

The funky perspective that Rahsaan Patterson adds to the songs, "Let It Go" and "Little Girl," (mentioning her father the late Donny Hathaway) lets us know that Lalah puts things in perspective and moves past them without regret on her life's journey. Every resonating, smooth, and soulful note that floats out of her throat is never over done, but perfectly balanced with instrumental confirmation that Lalah Hathaway is here to stay.

The sultry, talented, and beautiful songstress, Chanté Moore, is back to do her solo thing on her latest release Love The Woman. Yes, she and Kenny Lattimore are still together and marriage and family seems to agree with them both.

Chanté Moore reminds us that she has all of the elements an artist should have on this collection of songs. Love The Woman, effectively and maturely weaves together strong elements of Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Pop, never taking away from the interest of the story at hand.

Chanté takes us on a stroll with a woman dealing with the back and forth issues of a relationship and the love of herself. "Always Gonna Be Something," eases us into the story with it's common sense philosophies, elevating into the fanfare of the second track, "Can't Do It."

Rationalizing the situation with truth, "Special," wipes away the anger and tears giving way for a clearer thought process in the Gospel/Jazz boost called, "It Ain't Supposed To Be This Way," which begins to put the relationship into perspective. Ms. Moore shines so exquisitely on the Minnie Ripperton classic, "Give Me Time," stepping slightly away from its former classical arrangement to that of Smooth Jazz.

Nancy Wilson would have no choice but be proud of Chanté's interpretation of her classic Jazz hit, "Guess Who I Saw Today." If you did not know Chanté Moore before, Love The Woman, is the perfect introduction. Believe me, you want to know more from this minister's daughter.

By Emmial C. Fields

Thought provoking, controversial, and personal experiences have shaped the music industry before it was cool to "push the envelope" for popularity sake or album sales. Musicians and artists all over the world have removed their outer skin to tell the stories of common man and his daily struggles and triumphs, leaving the soul vulnerable for all to see and learn from.

Before the actual words existed in the writing format, stories of legends and humans with super-human abilities were carried throughout the world by Minstrels who sang words of encouragement and hope to end vicious cycles of human conflict or to shed light on our similarities. Stories like Beowulf, The Iliad, The Odyssey, some stories from The Bible, and even the tribal rhythms of the African Drums are examples of this early musical entertainment and communication.

Most of the music crossing the airways seems to display such simplistic and shallow concepts, like a sandwich without the meat. We have allowed boundaries and limitations to be created on ourselves and our neighbors as the result of people who are products on the video shows. Don't get me wrong, I love to shake a lil' somethin' every now and again, if an artist has that right combination that moves me to do so.

Now we categorize the elements of music and it's creators into what is now known as genres which help in organizing in the music stores, but limits the Music Artist who's eclectic style does not fit into a particular slot on the shelves. We also limit the evolution of music into time periods, by awarding merit for innovation during a particular year or decade (ex. Music Awards and Countdowns), when music of all styles are timeless to those whose hearts it touches. Long before studying music, I would observe the way a song left it's mark on myself and those around me.

By Emmial C. Fields

BARRETTWERKS and VOCI DANCE IN CONCERT unites star quality and energy together on the Johnny Holloway Theater's stage in Orlando, Florida for three performances: April 25 & 26, 2008 (8PM performances) and April 27, 2008 (2PM performance).

This collaborative showing of Dance Artists, is one that will have its audiences talking long after leaving the theater. Each dancer and choreographer performing in this collective show, are colorful threads of the dynamic Ellie Potts-Barrett tapestry and influence. Humbly, Ellie says that she wanted to bring this group of friends and loved ones together, due to the loss of some special people in her life. She jokingly adds, " and to see my work on stage."

In observing and speaking with the dancers, creative individuals in their own rite, reflections of this Matriarchal Icon can be seen and felt on and off the stage. The mutual respect and support the dancers share, shines in each piece striking a variety of emotions; from whimsical to soul-deep. Mrs. Barrett's positive influence is even evident in the works and dancers of Voci Dance. Ellie shares, "there have not been a lot of opportunities for us all to meet at one time."

She adds, "sometimes there might be weeks between rehearsals," though it is quite evident that professionalism and lack of ego goes the distance to bring such talent from a variety of locations in the U.S.

This family unit allowed for all of its members to add their input to the conversational images on stage (as it should). 12 Dancers begin their introduction with the bright Bach accompaniment. "Tango" continues to work corners of the mouth upwardly with it's light-hearted movement and spirit.
