Gay Marriage in an era of "Change"

By Raymont Anderson

Here it is 2008, the 21st century, the beginning of a new era as America does what many thought was the impossible… electing an African-American as president! Change is afoot!

However, despite the joyous celebration world-wide as Senator Barack Obama prepares to take his place in the White House, the Gay community has reason to be frustrated. As the vote that elected our new president rocks the world, a second vote rocks the gay community. Three states have altered their constitutions to define marriage as, “marriage as a heterosexuals-only institution.”

State number one: Arizona, where--two years ago-- they rejected just such a constitutional amendment. Arizona had been the first and only state to have such a ban, constitutionally, on marriage equality.

State number two: “In Florida, where the law requires constitutional amendments to win by 60%, a marriage amendment passed with disturbing ease, 62.1% to 37.9%,” according to John Cloud in his article “Why Gay Marriage Was Defeated in California .”

State number three: California, where much emphasis and hope was focused. Yet, now those hopes are dashed as Californians voted against marriage equality.

There are many who thought the battle was lost due to financial support-- or the lack thereof; however, money was not the issue. According to John Cloud, “A analysis of the most recent reports from the California Secretary of State, the pro-equality side raised an astonishing $43.6 million, compared with just $29.8 million for those who succeeded in keeping gays from marrying.” So money was not the deciding factor. What was?

Here we are, as I said, in the 21st century, with our new president-elect: an African-American man-- at a time when many still thought it was not possible. And only a few short years ago, Jesse Jackson's and Al Sharpton's speeches rang across the nation. Many people (African--Americans included) stated loud and clear that the country was not ready for a “Black” president. It makes you wonder why not. . .

If you look at the history of Black America going as far back as Willie Lynch, you get your answer.

Please continue to Full Story
