By Anna Phillips

The Reverend Al Sharpton is organizing a rally for black fathers this Saturday, the second in a series of demonstrations promised in the wake of the Sean Bell verdict.

The rally falls a day before Father's Day and is intended to encourage black fathers and families to address what organizers call a "Pandora's box of issues" that have surfaced following the acquittal of three detectives who shot Bell on his wedding day in 2006.

According to one of the march's organizers, Bishop Lester Williams, the rally will "dispel the myth of absentee black fathers" and will focus on demanding "a fair justice system through building police-community relations."

"Without fathers, we have no community," Bishop Williams, who had been scheduled to marry Bell and his fiancée, Nicole Paultre Bell, said.

Please continue to Full Story

By Ocean Morisset, Sr. Photojournalist

Reverand Al Sharpton's National Action Network planned a series of six "pray-ins" at strategic locations in New York. The images that follow are from the carefully orchestrated demonstration at New York City Police Headquarters, also known as One Police Plaza. On this bright spring day, hundereds of protesters came out in force for a day of civil disobedience. And that's just what it was. Not a brick was thrown, and people actually signed up to be arrested. Now that's deep! By the end of the day, over two hundered and twenty people were arrested, all for Sean Bell, an unarmed black man who was shot to death by police on his wedding day.

This was a tough shoot given the large number of protesters and media, but I was proud to be there because after all, I AM SEAN BELL!

Feel free to post your comments about the Sean Bell case.

Black people do not trust the police, especially not the "boys in blue" from NYC. Are black people justified in being scared of NYPD? Looking at the recent past there have plenty of cases where the NY Police Department has overstepped their bounds and abused there powers.
I am just as astonished as everyone. Outraged like most. Saddened for my brother, and will join others in the pursuit of JUSTICE!

On Friday April 25th I joined hundreds of other Sean Bell supporters and media outside the Queens County Criminal Courthouse to hear the verdict of the Sean Bell murder trial. Sean Bell was a young UNARMED African American man whose body was riddled with bullets, killing him instantly, by three New York City Police Officers. Bell was to be married later the same day. The NOT GUILTY verdict sent a shockwave of raw emotion throughout the crowd outside the courthouse, as well as to people of African descent everywhere.

Below are some images that document the scene outside the courthouse moments after the verdict was read.

In memory of SEAN BELL and with my heartfelt condolences to the Bell's family and friends.

The aftermath of the shooting of Sean Bell and his two friends outside a strip club was reminiscent of an episode of CSI: New York.

But, unlike the television series, where unquestionable forensic evidence usually leads suspects to make neat and tidy confessions, the Sean Bell case ended in a messy court case.

The saga began in the early hours of 25 November 2006, when the 23-year-old left the Kalua strip club in the New York suburb of Queens with his friends Trent Benefield and Jose Guzman.

A heated dispute broke out with another patron of the club and the three friends apparently tried to drive away before pandemonium broke out.

No gun found

Five undercover police officers, who had been investigating prostitution allegations at the Kalua club, fired a total of 50 shots at the car carrying Mr Bell and his friends.

Two detectives, Michael Oliver and Gescard Isnora, were later charged with manslaughter and a third officer, Marc Cooper, was accused of reckless endangerment.

Mr Isnora and Mr Oliver face up to 25 years in jail if convicted.

Sean Bell, 23, was shot as he was leaving a party at a strip club in the suburb of Queens in November 2006.

In a packed Queens courtroom, Supreme Court Justice Arthur Cooperman cleared the three men of all charges.

The case had generated accusations of police racism and brutality.

Shouts of "No!" erupted in the crowd outside the courthouse as word of the verdict spread, said reports. Some people wept on each other's shoulders.

New South Wales police this week acknowledged the global reach of American gangs in dangerously influencing wayward Australian youth.

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said police were closely monitoring the trend of so-called gangs on the internet, which had given youngsters a new avenue in which to boast and brag.

"The concern for police is the Americanisation of these young men who are influenced by the criminal gang culture in the US, by parading themselves and thumbing their noses at the law," he says.
