The dictum that when America (I prefer western world) sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold gains credence when one looks at the confidence and boldness that homosexuals in Uganda exhibited on August 16, 2007 when they held their first press conference.
After centuries of campaigning and legal battles by gay rights groups in western countries, homosexuality is now widely accepted, but most important legal.
In Africa, Uganda seems to be next in the firing line after South Africa and it seems there is no better timing than using the fast approaching Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting as the bargaining chip.
The Minister of Ethics and Integrity condemned outside countries like Canada and The Netherlands for putting pressure on Uganda to change its laws or increase rights for homosexuals. The Human Rights Watch launched a scathing attack on President Yoweri Museveni's government for promoting state homophobia and called for the repealing of Uganda's laws drafted in colonial times and strengthened in 1990's.
As Pastor Martin Sempa observes, the boldness of the Ugandan gay rights activists is 'a well orchestrated effort to intimidate the Government.'
It is also meant to psychologically prepare Ugandans for a new dispensation of a permissive society that the significant minority in the western world would love to see.
If Ugandans concede ground to homosexuality, more is yet to come.
There are a wide range of sexual aberrations in the western world that are legal. Sex change or sex reassignment surgery, a procedure whereby a female can decide to undergo an operation and become a male or a man becomes a woman, is in vogue. Amazing as this is, it does not warrant social acceptability. It is an indicator of how human beings have used science to distort the natural world and God's creation.
I wonder whether the human race with time will remain the same with such un-Godly interventions. In Denmark and Norway, bestiality, which is referred to as zoo sexual activity, but precisely sex between human beings and animals is perfectly legal. Wife swapping and sadomasochism are in vogue. The big question is: Once we concede ground to homosexuality, aren't we going to concede to some of the other sexual aberrations?
Will Uganda give way this time? If we do, we should brace ourselves since the pandora's box will be opened and there will be more than meets the eye.
