In this hostile climate of African American Christian hysteria and internalized racism, I keep wondering What Would Jesus Do? Would Jesus eliminate the separation of church and state? Would Jesus spread homophobia and hate for further the division of African Americans? Would Jesus make Same Gender Loving African American families targets for prejudice, violence, and possibly murder? Would Jesus discriminate against anyone for any reason?

How could our leaders be so ignorant and irresponsible when it comes to the well being of other African Americans? The church and many other mainstream organizations have made us and our children targets by not supporting our issues. The Church’s divisive maneuvers have torn families apart instead of strengthening them. Mothers are against daughters, and fathers against sons. Homophobias in African American communities keep our youth homeless, the drug use and suicide rates high! I know hundreds of lesbians that had premature sex due to pressure from the Church and their families just to be normal and accepted! They have created a climate of hostility and hate. Because of decades of homophobia, African American families are consistently torn apart. People have turned our people against their own flesh and blood.

At this point in American history, it’s not even about marriage anymore. It’s about the church desecrating the image of African American gays. This makes a loud statement to America and the world that same sex couples and their families will not be accepted or treated as equals. This is blatant amplified discrimination. How can our African American leadership support this thinking? The Church has opened up the flood gates of hatred that may last for years. Is this what Jesus would do? Does this hate-filled climate promote the Faith Based Initiatives? Dose this create unity in the African American communities? Dose this help protect the intuition of marriage or strengthen the family structure?

There are many people and organizations that oppose same sex marriage. Their main argument is that same sex unions will threaten and weaken the institution of traditional marriage. Same sex unions will supposedly destroy the family structure! Family structure? I am so disappointed in our people. They are being lied to and mislead.

In my opinion Biblical interpretations and murder for insurance benefits have weakened the institution of marriage. Extramarital affairs and dishonesty weaken the institution of marriage. Bigamy, spousal abuse, and child abuse have weakened the institution of marriage. I could go on and on with examples of how America’s values have not only weakened the institution of marriage, they have destroyed it!

The traditional family has gone through an enormous transformation since the early 1900’s. The divorce rate continues to skyrocket, and the reality of single parent households is norm. Everyday, numerous unplanned and unwanted pregnancies are brought into the world! Look at the amount of African American children in foster care, in orphanages, and in juvenile hall. Is this because of a strong traditional marriage? Are these children in foster care because they had a strong family structure? Is this because gay people wish to marry? Because of these facts, I would think this country has more important issues to tackle instead of restricting the basic rights of gay people. Our African American leadership should be focused on education, healthcare, social security, affordable housing, and employment. Not just for African American heterosexuals, but for all African Americans.

I keep hearing the phrase, “A civilized American Society”! A civilized American society would be accepting of all people, not just Whites or heterosexuals. A civilized American society would consist of clergy that are not pedophiles and liars. It would not consist of churches that pay out millions to cover their tracks. A civilized American society would not consist of bigots, war mongers, or lynch mobs that are never prosecuted for their actions or their deeds.

Let’s ask ourselves what would Jesus do to strengthen marriage and the family structure? Jesus would not allow churches to convince congregants to humiliate, ostracize, and discard their gay children. That doesn’t make a family stronger! Jesus would never overlook the facts of poverty, education, healthcare, black on black crime, HIV/AIDS, but insist on homosexuality. Jesus would never use Biblical scripture to turn people against each other, demonize anyone or use the Bible to judge any group of people. Jesus would strengthen marriage and the family structure by allowing our men to just be themselves. If our men were allowed to just be, there would be no Down Low phenomenon! Jesus would convince our leaders to not commit adultery or have children out of wedlock. Jesus would create ways for the heterosexual couple to make their marriage work instead of cheating, divorce, violence, or even death. Jesus would communicate modern ways to deal with gender difference, sexuality, and Same Gender Love. Jesus would create a civilized American society by not using the Lord’s name in vain or being a hypocrite.

The late Coretta Scott King has a clear understanding of the Christ-consciousness. Mrs. King spoke out against the Federal Constitutional Amendment prohibiting same sex marriage. Mrs. King stated, “Gay and lesbian people have families, their families should have legal protection, whether by marriage or civil union. A Constitutional Amendment banning same sex marriage is a form of gay bashing, and it would do nothing at all to protect traditional marriages”.

Atrocities have been committed in the name of God through centuries by saved and devout groups throughout the world. Look at the African Diaspora who are still enslaved, The Spanish Inquisition, and the Holocaust. This carnage was committed by those who believed they were doing the right thing. Innocent people were persecuted for nothing! Your people!

Again, this battle of discrimination is no longer about marriage. It’s about our right to just be. Be a part of your future and the future of your beliefs. Your words and actions will make a difference in changing the landscape of discrimination.

This war on African American gays may have temporarily divided us as a people, but we are far from conquered.

“Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God” Matt 5:9
