Jena, LA (AHN) - An African-American high school student in Jena, Louisiana, who was convicted of beating up a white classmate, is now free on bail. An appeal overturned his prior trial and ordered the charges against him to be filed in juvenile court.

Mychal Bell, one of the "Jena 6" students accused of beating another student, was convicted of conspiracy to commit second-degree battery, but had those charges tossed out by a higher court.

The beating came after a string of racially-charged incidents in the town of 3,000 people. A crowd of 15,000 protesters gathered in Jena this week to help free the 17-year-old Bell, who remained in prison despite having his conviction overturned.

"Tonight, Mychal can go home, but Mychal is not out of the juvenile process. He goes home because a lot of people left their home and stood up for him," Rev. Al Sharpton, who rallied to help the Jena defendants, said.
