Nigerian Gay Movie Out Soon

All is set for the Nigerian film industry to release the first gay movie titled “Sinful Saints” early next year.

Directed by Nigeria’s 2005 Best Film Director, Dickson Iruegbu, the movie seeks to answer such questions as whether homosexuality is an African or borrowed culture.

“Sinful Saints is a very controversial movie. It deals with a very sensitive but neglected topic; homosexuality. The movie will explore homosexuality in Nigeria,” Iruegbu revealed.

How did it creep into our society? How do we discuss issues relating to sex with our children? Do we frighten them with our experiences? The family is the ultimate unit of society but unfortunately most homes lack good ways of discussing sex-related issues.

Sinful Saints is the story of a kid whose over-protective mum (Clarion Chukwura) sheltered him so much that at age 19 he had not had any contact with a woman.

Meanwhile his hormones are raging but ignorance has set in and he clings onto his fellow man to satisfy his sexual needs. Soon he is enmeshed in homosexuality.

According to Iruegbu, “This is a topic we all shy away from but it is there. People experience it everyday and we have to talk about it and enlighten people. Some of us are trying to summon the courage to discuss it. For me it is high time we discussed it.”

The movie features steamy scenes of man-to-man love and is an intricate web of ignorance, jealousy, betrayal and ultimately murder.

Kanayo O. Kanayo (KOK), Charles Waran, Maurice Nwabueze and Clarion Chukwura are starring in this movie that would stretch the limits of censorship in Nigeria.

On the challenges of shooting such a movie, Iruegbu said: “It took a long time to convince the artistes to play the roles. I paid three times what is obtainable for Nigerian movies. I have sunk over N8,000,000 in the project. I know it will shock Nigerians but the story has to be told. It is happening everywhere and people want to talk about it.

According to him, he is not out to witch-hunt the homosexual click, believed to be very influential in Nollywood.

For Charles Waran, one of the lead actors, who plays a capricious role under the ‘Fag Lord’ (KOK) as a pimp, “the movie is important to me. It is a tragedy that young men could find themselves gay and be proud of it. I feel challenged playing this role. It’s a love story on the fag side of life.” Credit: Nigeriafilms.com

i must say honestly dat this story is all bout me cause its exactly what happened and i'm wondering if someone saw my experience one way or the other but i'm shocked to honestly say this story tells bout my life and i'm glad someone is tellin it to the world, i'm a nigerian from delta state cause i've been caged in silence despite the faact that i've been bisexual all my life and i'm 45yrs of age and worst of all in my sexuall life i've slept with a movie producer b4 only 4me to see his name later on dat he was a big producer i wont mention anynames but all the same my heart bleeds with joy that the world would ve something to say bout nigerian gaymen and beleive me sir we r more out there than the straight men u think r really straight cause my experience have made me meet unbelievable men on a normal day you would never in ur life know that they r gay or bisexuall. and if this film is well told i would love to share my true life story but i cant really reveal my identity cause i'm afraid of what the general public would do to me. thanks and Jesus would surely bless u 4this movie Amen.

It sad that you are following the lead of America - why is it that Nigerians can not pave their own way and be proud of it - always looking for some one to copy - gay movies too bad. .. perversity - what people will do to make money. Just because it exists does not mean it is right. I think child pornography exist why not try that next. How far Nigeria has fallen :(

Is a shame you cannot face the reality, Forget about America we are here in nigeria where even the worst things happen. but considering the fact that people are being marginalized most of us are scared of showing who we really are even you... take it or not. Lets wake up to reality and stop depriving our self the right of pleasure which happen to be a free gift of nature. Now ask ur self, have you not felt the warmnest of your father b4 even as a child? so 99% if not 100% of the people in the society are guilty of these but pretence bcos of fear covers it all.

Where Can we get the Movie? I believe it needs more publicity, a bigger review. It is not about the money, it is about consciousness and preparing the public for the reality of what is happening in our society. If the movies is positive, it is hoped that it will help gay people of all ages to reconcile with their sexuality, if it is negative it will create more problem for the gay people. There is a church called House Of Rainbow in Lagos, I know and have heard of. This church is inclusive, a bible believing and teaching church and welcoming to the gay community, this in my view is progressive and we should be open minded to let nature take its cause. Nigeria is not fallen, because we need to know the truth and allow a new age of Change to lead us.

This is a very interesting story. U guys should keep it up! I 'm a Nigerian in Europe and i feel gud to read this story. It actually happend on ma life as well. Today, here in Europe, i feel better cause i can follow ma ways and i 'm a happy person.

Homosexuality has been in existence in Nigeria and in Africa in general. Though i've longed to see this new movie here in London but haven't been able to get my hands on it.
Therefore I reserve my opinion on this until i see the movie or read the book if there is any.
But i would advice some naive minds to be far away from criticising these movie producers' ingenuity , uniqueness and courage.

Can anyone tell me how and where to purchase this movie?

well thanks for the movie, in the mind of the producer he night think he his trying to expose gay people. man everybody is entitle to his own opinion.am gay and an proud am to be.an a Nigerian and live in nigeria,but have not seen the movie.were can i get it.

i really like the idea of producing this film.there are a lot of gays in nigeria,but will pretend such thing never happen in nigeria.i think it will mbring out wht the think we don't know.

This is really great,for the actos to take such a bold step in the issues of homosexuality....its bein praciced by many,so nigerians and africans need to be educated on what being gay is all about .

well thanks for the movie i think this movie sinful saint is reminding me why i'm been gay today, it has a similar story with mine. my story is so bitter and am not happy with the hole thing but what bafles me most is that many poeple think that been gay is by choice, i dont blame them cause they dont understand and never will. i think my gayness is cursed by my parents over-protective and now am 23yrs. i think my parents are the curse but i dont know how to tell them what they have curse me
i just pray that parents will understand and teach their children the best way of life....
