Book Review: "Down Low Sistahs" by Wakiem Freeman

Just when you thought you heard it all with women having problems with their men being on the down low, Urban Fiction's finest, Wakiem Freeman, takes a very popular topic and turns the tables by giving you a very raw point of view through the male perspective in his new novel, "Down Low Sistahs".

Since listening to a radio talk show in regards to the topic "Are there any good black men left on the planet earth?" Nicor decides to turn a new leaf and be a one-woman man, especially after six months of dating the woman of his dreams, Tamar. Unfortunately, Tamar brings Nicor's world to a surprising turn when she hits him with a devastating bombshell on his 25th birthday. Not only was she cheating on him during the duration of their relationship, but was involved with……………another woman.

Following the advice of his homie, the young-girl chasing Demetri, Nicor falls back into his old ways and starts playing the field again. Through out his bed hopping, headboard banging, one night stand-experiences, to his surprise, Nicor starts to discover that all of the women he has been dealing with are ALL on the down low. This really starts to push him to the brink and make him question, "Are there ANY good STRAIGHT women left on the planet earth?"

Nicor soon starts growing inspired to write a song titled, "I Need To Know", which hits the top of the R&B charts. But just when he starts to make sense of his own warped-reality with down low sistahs, his old girlfriend, Tamar drops back into his life with yet another bombshell.

Even though some of us had expected reading about a female's perspective on being on the down low, we felt it was still very intriguing and refreshing for Wakiem Freeman to give us the straight male's perspective through Nicor's eyes. Nicor was undoubtedly a very emotional character, who took his personal situations seriously. Even though he was a character we could not really relate too, Wakiem puts you into Nicor's shoes and automatically makes you empathize with what he was going through. A least favorite character of ours was Alexxus, who was not only portrayed as a very needy and desperate character, but also tries convincing Nicor that he was her true one and only, but turns out to have a husband, children and on the down low to top it off.

Wakiem also brings up some interesting sexual topics, including the anal-sex that Nicor seemed to enjoy having the most of with his female partners. You would also think in the straight world, a bisexual woman would be every straight man's fantasy, but that definitely was not the case with Nicor. Wakiem Freeman also opens the door to questions we are dying to get answered, such as: "Why is Nicor a magnet to down low women?" and "Why are people on the down low anyway?" So if you want to read a book that will not only peak your curiosity, but have you giving your neighbor or even your sister a second look, then look no further, "Down Low Sistahs" are waiting for you.
