I would like to believe that I'm a student & teacher of life. At the beginning of 2007, I relocated from NYC to Charlotte, NC. I've written 4 books of poetry and have just completed my 1st novel. I would like to believe that my life experience may be able to educate others by seeing the world thru my eyes. There's always a point of view, & I'd like to add my flavor. I'm an extremely private person, however, I believe that I can speak for the voices that need to be heard.

I am, we are, at an exciting time in political history. We may have our first black, American President in the White house. As a credit to all people of color, we may have our first person of color in the White House who's Commander in Chief. I feel that during this time, a lot of us are researching our family history, our roots, and discovering that we are or are not as Afro American, or Latin or whatever as we were led to believe, however, according to White America a person of color is still Black.
Hopefully we will finally realize that there's power in numbers, there's strength in numbers and hopefully we will finally learn to love and embrace all of who we are. Someone said to me that Senator Obama is more African American than a lot of us, his father is from African and his mother is American White. You know there's some truth to that.
African American director and actor, Spike Lee, has always been true to himself, like him, love him or hate him, he's still Spike all of the time. I read an article where Mr. Lee believes that because of this moment in time, in history, our presidential hopefully Mr. Barack Obama will change the black, African American, sound of music.
| I'm not sure how. Since the election is in about two months. Also are we to believe that our music is just our music? In the last few music years, music has blend and lend it self to sometimes not have a defined color. You can be a white artist and sound black. Music has become more universal. Perhaps Spike believes that our black brothers and sisters have a responsibility to change the message in the music.
Will we go back to the days of singing songs like, "We Shall Overcome." That horse is out of the barn. Because of our heroes who have fought for us, we are now able to even vote, to continue our education, to marry who we chose, to be the best that we can be on any level. |

Spike believes that Obama will inspire our black artist and writers to reach for higher ground lyrically. I would like to believe that Senator Obama will inspire not just the black but also the yellow, the red, the brown and the white to look and love beyond color, beyond race, beyond society status. Even if your choice is of someone in your own race, meaning color, we should be able to appreciate all since we are all born and are part of the human existence, the human race. |

Ending his thought, Spike said, "I believe artists have to lead the way. The same way as in the turbulent 60s... that music reflected both the difficult times we were going through and the enthusiasm and optimism we had, too. And I think Obama is going to have the same effect on African-American artists-and it's needed." Again, Spike is correct in explaining that every generation had its music, its voice, its song. James Brown was singing, "Say It Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud." We had Nat King Cole , Sammy Davis , Diahann Carroll, Eartha Kitt and Ella Fitzgerald looking outside of the box, and singing in a different way that was still unique and true to themselves which went beyond color and race. |
| I think that it's an interesting time in history and its not just a black thing, it's a right thing, a correct thing, a "we need a change thing." This is a moment in history, that no matter the skin color, our youth will speak about this to their children, articles are written, some truths, some lies, but still there is some record of the biggest event in the history of America.
We need to thank Spike Lee for speaking up. No matter what your opinion is of him, he's always true to himself. You read it here at GBMNews.com |
