On April 24th Russell Simmons released his second book, “Do You”, which left me thinking, “I didn’t know he had written one at all!” I suppose in retrospect it shouldn’t surprise me at all that He would write a book, and particularly, an inspirational book, giving a prescription for success both in the professional as well as the personal realms. “Do You” as far as I can tell I s Russell’s personal prescription for success in personal fulfillment and happiness and success in one’s career.

Book Review: Do You - Russell Simmons
The basis of “Do You” is the 12 principles that Simmons says he lives by and which he wants to share with the world saying “by tapping into the power inside you, you can not only get all the things you want in life, but most important, you can enjoy them too.” The 12 principles include: See Your Vision And Stick With It; Always Do You; Get Your Mind Right; Stop Frontin’ And Start Today; Never Less Than Your Best; Surround Yourself With The Right People; There Are No Failures Only Quitters; Science Of Success, Plant The Good Seeds; You Can Never Get Before You Give; Successful People Stay Open To Change; Be Powerful, Be Heard; and Spit Truth To Power. Along with these simple laws Simmons adds that the practice of daily Yoga over the last 10 years has allowed him to reach a higher level of personal fulfillment. In fact he credits yoga as one of the biggest single experience in his life that has contributed to the betterment of his Life. Simmons is of the view that the key to success lies within us all and we only need to harness it and tap into it in order to reach that higher plane saying, "I really do believe that we all possess happiness and success in our hearts, and we know these laws instinctively," in fact Simmons takes little credit for himself even regarding this book defining it as a reminder guide to help us access the tremendous power inside us, which to me suggests that rather than thinking of himself as a teacher, he is merely looking at himself as someone who is reminding us of something we already know. I have to say that I am constantly wowed by this man’s simple wisdom and humility despite his great success which inclines me to want to run out and get a copy of this book.

Simmons is currently on a book tour to promote “Do You” which has been available in stores since April 24th. Some of the cities he is visiting include New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Atlanta, Birmingham, Durham, Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, Miami, Houston and St. Louis. The Book includes a forewood by real estate mogul Donald Trump as well as a back cover testimonial by rapper Nas. William Shinker, President and Publisher of Gotham Books which has published the book says of Simmons, "He has achieved the new American Dream and his book shows how anyone who really wants to achieve can do so, no matter what their background." “Do You” is now available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon as well as your favorite local bookshop.
