Mark your Calendars. June 15 through August 31 are the dates for the kick-off of the first segment of the Carryin’On Project. A photo exhibition based on the “One Shots” of famous Pittsburgh photographer Teenie Harris’ images of black queer individuals, community and life will open on Friday, June 15 at the internationally acclaimed Andy Warhol Museum.
The photos will also serve as the basis for the ongoing research of this culturally rich Pittsburgh and American community, and the entire two year multidisciplinary project which will include a film documentary and another juxtaposed mixed-media exhibition at SPACE gallery in Pittsburgh, PA.
This project seeks to celebrate the history, contributions and realities of Lesbian,Gay,Bisexuals,Transexuals,Queer and Intersexed individuals, families and communities in our region and country—then and now. It will also confront the stigmas associated with homophobias, transphobias&more that continue to feed the flames of discrimination in our various societies.
In-depth programming is planned with this exhibit and project which will include conversations with persons from that era, re-enactments of revues and performances from clubs such as Little Paris; dialogues, workshops and panel discussions of current/past LGBT issues, joys&concerns, Warhol Weekend Factory activities to name a few.
The Carryin’On Exhibition Project is being coordinated and curated by noted performer and artist, Deryck Tines in collaboration with Tom Sokoloski, Director of the Warhol Museum, and Louise Lippincott, Curator for the Carnegie Museums which owns the Teenie Harris Archives.

I never knew this. I was born and reared in the Homewood/Brushton area of Pgh, PA, from 1945 to 1963.
I found Carryin' On stuff in Chicago from 1963 to date. Thanks!
