Isaiah Washington has spoken out about his dismissal from the hit series Grey's Anatomy.
"I'm saddened by the outcome. I did everything that the producers and the network asked me to do," the actor told Entertainment Weekly. "I came back under great duress and stress, and thought I was doing the job I was hired to do."
Washington, 43, was informed earlier this month that his contract would not be renewed for season four.
Washington came under fire last year following an on-set altercation with Patrick Dempsey in which he referred to co-star T.R. Knight as a "faggot." He repeated the word backstage at the Golden Globes.
Washington told EW the incident was "a horrible misunderstanding" that was "blown out of proportion."
He received counseling, met with members of the gay community and appeared in a public service announcement against the use of hate speech.
"I can only apologize so many times. I can only accept so much responsibility," he told the magazine. "All the players involved have taken care of what we needed to take care of in-house - and the media took it in a different direction."
Asked if he and Knight are on good terms, Washington replied: "I don't know. You have to ask T.R. that."
