Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister Patrick Manning wants the United States and Europe to work with Caricom to develop ‘a security net’ in the Caribbean Sea.

Mr Manning raised the matter when he met with the ambassadors of the United States, France, Britain and the Netherlands in his capacity as the Caricom leader responsible for security matters.

His chief concern is said to be about drugs trafficking and other forms of criminal activities in the region.

The meeting has also come on the heels of an alleged terrorist plot by Caribbean nationals to bomb New York's main airport.

Three of the four accused Caribbean men are in custody in Port of Spain awaiting an extradition hearing. They are wanted by US authorities. A fourth Caribbean man is being held in America.

Vital interests

Mr Manning is said to have invited the American, Dutch, British and French ambassadors to the meeting because those countries have vital commercial interests in the Caribbean.

But Mr Manning hopes to include information on how the four countries can help in his security report for next month's Caricom heads of government conference.

It's not the first time recently that the Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister has raised the regional security issue.

Just over a week ago he called on his colleague governments in Caricom to consider a regional security plan.
