CAPE TOWN – A 15-year-old boy has died in the Eastern Cape after being circumcised, allegedly by an 18-year-old, the province’s health department said on Friday.

Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the boy, from Ziphunzana settlement on the outskirts of East London, died on Wednesday.

Police were searching for the 18-year-old.

Kupelo said a traditional surgeon was arrested in Transkei on Thursday for circumcising two boys under the age of 10, and was being held at Ngqeleni police station.

Department officials had frustrated attempts to illegally circumcise another 51 boys in the Ngqeleni and Libode areas.

Twenty-two of the boys had stolen chickens from homesteads as payment for circumcision. They were hauled before a village council on Friday, and arrangements would be made to hold a legal ceremony for those that were of age. Earlier this week another eight unregistered surgeons were arrested for circumcising boys in the Transkei. –Sapa
