Only half of gay people are open about their sexuality at their workplace, according to a survey conducted for the magazine Gay Community News.

The survey of almost 2,000 gays, lesbians and transsexuals found that many are highly-educated and well-paid professionals who are nonetheless unwilling to come out about their sexuality at work.

Almost 80% are open about their sexuality with friends and 60% have come out to their family.


However, just 50% have told their work colleagues they are gay.

The survey also found that gay people's earning are generally above the average wage, while the vast majority of gay couples questioned would choose to marry their partners if legislation was brought in.
