Cuba Trains Health Promoters to Face HIV-AIDS

The training of health promoters to deal with the topic of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV-AIDS, is one of the strategies followed in Cuba to fight this global pandemic.
This and other experiences will be analyzed on Tuesday and Wednesday during a National Meeting of coordinators of the national project for adolescents and youth in the prevention of HIV-AIDS that takes place in Santiago de Cuba.
The event is organized by the National Center for AIDS Prevention and participants will make emphasis on educational actions, community work, and prevention, in general, as they are key elements to fight this disease.
Thus far, a total of 300 promoters in this field have been trained in Santiago de Cuba and 200 of them are working in schools, factories and other centers.
Other experiences in the province include the 'A corazón abierto' (With an open heart) project, which is a space of reflection and debate mainly for adolescents and youth held every two months.
Since the beginning of the AIDS pandemic, almost three thousand people have been infected in Cuba, one of the lowest rates in the continent.
