Nigerian artists have taken to the streets to protest the planned sale of the state-owned National Theatre, officials said on Wednesday.
Actors, actresses, musicians and backstage workers at the theatre held the rally in Lagos on Tuesday, denouncing a plan to sell the company to private investors.
A spokesperson for the demonstrators, Biodun Abe, said artistes would not allow the government to sell of the country's cultural heritage.
"The National Theatre is a monument and symbol of our cultural heritage and pride. No responsible citizen will allow the sale because that will amount to a rape on our culture," he told reporters.
