Emmy-Award winning musician and noted philanthropist Peter Buffett, has teamed up with R&B/Hip Hop sensation and Grammy Nominee, Akon in preparation of a live cultural event and concert whixh was held in the United Nation's General Assembly Hall on March 25th. Peter and Akon will debut the resulting track, "Blood Into Gold," to commemorate the 2009 International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The download proceeds from the single will all go to the education and elimination of human trafficking worldwide.
| The Culture Project, a non-profit organization, asked Peter Buffett to write the song specifically for this star-studded commemoration. Contributing his voice and production knowledge to "Blood Into Gold," Akon shares the evening with many legendary performers from all over the globe including (as Music Director) the talented and seasoned music veteran, Nile Rodgers.
Other performers scheduled to appear are: Audrey Babcock (Mezzo-Soprano), Angela Brown (Soprano), The Blind Boys of Alabama, Danny Glover, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Emeline Michel, The Marley Brothers, CCH Pounder, Stephanie Benson, Phylicia Rashad, and more. Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali's appearance will be broadcasted via their pre-taped testimonials. |

| "Breaking the Silence, Beating the Drum," is the theme for which all of the evening's events are surrounded. The theme this year was chosen because of the traditional use of the drum throughout the world. The drum reminds us of the negative historical results and consequences of transatlantic slave trade, followed by racism and prejudice.
Envisioning the triumph of the human spirit over slavery and human trafficking was enough of a purpose to motivate The Culture Project to produce the concert, and the United Nations is the right venue to host the event. At this point we are in need of a global response to end such inhumane practices against our fellow human beings. |

While listening to Soul Comfort, I found that nothing that I had on my mind prior to putting on the CD mattered. "Doing M' Thing," begins the compilation with its soulful bounce and Nhojj's soothing falsetto voice. This combination of elements, previously, could only be successfully executed by artists like: Will Downing, Maxwell, Luther Vandross and now... Nhojj. On the centering track, "Love," Nhojj's voice is like a massage to the brain with harmonies that melt the rest of the body into a full relaxed state. It's no wonder why Nhojj has been named #1 Jazz Artist, with such musicality and creativity how could you expect any less? "Dream" and "Spring Rain," continues the beauty and yet another layer of how Nhojj feels music and makes you feel it to. What great power to possess. Check him out for yourself.

Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics - India.Arie

Reviewed by: Emmial C. Fields, Music CorrespondentIs there anyone out there as excited as I am about the new India.Arie CD? Testimony Vol. 2, Love & Politics is the result of India.Arie's travels around the world and the interpretation of what her eyes and heart beheld. If you haven't been paying attention to the rebirths, reinventions, and maturing of one of the world's most passionate thinkers and musicians, then jump on the boat and take this Voyage to India.

| Testimony: Vol. 2 Love & Politics India.Arie Republic |
| The humble and somewhat introverted Georgia Peach that we know to be India.Arie is coming at us with both barrels blazing. The ballads on Testimony Vol. 2, Love & Politics are not two-dimensional regurgitations nor imitations of another artist. Each song has its own spirit, soul, and identity letting me know that this collection was not put together in hast, but nurtured and ready to be released on the open and accepting minds. Aggression is not a character trait usually shown by Miss India, until now.
India's "Psalm 23" spills over reassurance of God's grace, spiritual guidance, and a bass/organ combination that will awaken the connectors to the soul. MC Lyte gives her testimony in rhyme, keeping the message consistent from the fade-in to the fade-out. Encouragement can be found within every India.Arie branded note of this tune, leaving behind an ethereal lightness and the desire to restart the track (do it!!...this track gets better with each listen) The acoustic, island interpretation of Sade's, "Pearls" (with Dobet Gnahore) releases the somberness of the previous version. India sings the story of the "woman in Semolia," making sure she does not leave out the other struggling women throughout the world.
| ||||||
| Though she (India) shows multiple perspectives, though the struggle is the same for all of the women. They all, "cry to the heaven above," for strength to make it through their struggles. Each of the characters' sacrifices of themselves puts into perspective how spoiled and self-centered we are. "Chocolate High," brings Musiq Soulchild to this collection alongside India, harmonizing musically and humanly (as we all have the capacity to do).
The positive way this song lingers in the air even after the last note is chimed, gives me hope that humanity has not forgotten how to love; India and Musiq can feel it. Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics can best be described as a Dove chocolate square. Intense satisfaction that is too good to be true, lasting until it's melted existence warrants a replay for more of the same fulfilling, guilty pleasure.

Featured Choreographers: Amy Davidson, Christine French, Leaia Caver, and Russell Sultzbach
Watching the future stars of Dance in both of the Ballet South Dance Companies was an absolute treat for me. For both, the Senior and Junior Companies to successfully perform this repertoire of modern, jazz, and ballet requires focus and versatility. Well, congratulations are in order for Ballet South. These young performers not only showed off their versatility in dance, but they did it while looking like they were having the time of their lives. That's how you know you have walked into the right show.
| "Ballet Dancers" by Brenda Guyton |
| All of these ladies and gentleman should be very proud of their quality performances. There were so many "Wow" moments but in the interest of space, I would like to point out some of the ones that still have me excited. The show opened with "Dancing" and already I was swept onto the stage absorbing each emotionally charged story as expressed by Christine French and The Senior Company. The connection of music and movement were not missed in this piece. I especially enjoyed the connectivity of all of the dancers working as one community in the dramatic and joyful section, "The Time of My Life."
Giving props to her Pops and the Ohio State Buckeyes, Amy Davidson sets her choreography on the Junior Company. Suited up in beige capri pants and red collegiate sweaters, these young ladies march, cheer, and play football through dance movement and looked cute doing it.
| ||||
| Smack Dab in the middle of the show, "Illuminate," brings the Senior Company back to the stage in classical form. Tchaikovsky's "Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 35," choreographed by Russell Sultzbach was the soundtrack for this difficult and expressive work, which was superbly executed by the entire company. There were moments when Meredith Barton had my heart balanced on the tip of her point shoe when she extended with such control and musicality. The chemistry between Garrett Marks and Catherine Silver (two of the most present personalities on the stage) was just lovely to watch. | ||||
| When I thought I had been amazed to the gills, Leaia Caver completely transforms the Senior Company in, "So InCline - A Patsy Cline Ballet." Now people you have not seen a stompin' good time until you have seen the Senior Company bounce to the music as one complete unit while pushing you through the old creaking door of a Honky Tonk. I don't think my foot stopped tapping until I got to my car. | ![]() Russel Sultzbach Artistic Director | |||
| Once again, the Marks and Silver chemistry made me smile so big that I might need Botox to give my cheek muscles a break for a while. Meredith Barton rocked my world so hard with every tasteful hip switch and sway, never losing any of her beautiful technique and musicality in "Crazy". Girl, go ahead and write your check, the money's in the bank.
Central Florida still has quality performers and entertainment and one of the places they frequent are Ballet South. If you have not yet caught a show with Ballet South, then I think you might want to start your psycho therapy first just to make sure you've gotten the crazies out of your system. Don't worry they will return next Season. Be ready … I know I will. Keep up with the company at: Ballet South

| Bold Right Life is the third and most recent solo release from Kierra "Kiki" Sheard, daughter of Karen Clark-Sheard. It seems not so long ago I was listening to her first solo CD, I Owe You, and found myself quite impressed with the strength of such a young voice. Kierra Sheard definitely does not fall far from the legacy of The Clark Sisters, and it is no surprise that she has been successful thus far with her career.
| |
| That final emotional element that can only be experienced through life's daily challenges, can be heard clearly on this mature release Bold Right Life. This collection of contemporary gospel tracks could easily be found in the possession of little Tameka in the Junior Choir or her parents. | ![]() |
| The subject matter Kierra approaches on this release can help any young teen develop and grow through the peer pressures of today's life. On the track, "My Boyfriend," she shines some light on relationship issues. Still keeping the content focused on God with very modern R&B / Hip Hop beats pumping her message through. Kierra spells it out for you that she is a C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N, just in case you let the beat confuse you on the track, "Wave Your Banner." | |

| Right around the holidays, the levels of stress and adrenaline worldwide are so high that we all tend to lose a bit of ourselves and forget that this is supposed to be a joyous time. Well, you have made it through and you're doing fine. The next step is to relax.
I've got the perfect CD for clearing away the left over stress. KJ Denhert's Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz, lifted away my stress and eased me into 2009. I love the minstrel artists that have that warmth that pours out from their soul, into their music, and out to my soul (that's called a soul connection kids). KJ Denhert has now joined me on a date, several evenings of solitude and recharging, and many moments of reflection. What a gift to receive just the knowledge of KJ Denhert's existence and even better to experience her music and charisma.
|
| |
| Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz has prose set to acoustic and jazz accompaniment that eases any disposition. The stories that she tells are vivid and imaginative. The way she captures you with lines like, "I'm as tired as my shoes…" tells you the extreme lengths her characters experience life. "Message In A Bottle," sets you on a journey and makes you want to pray that the message is received where it is purposed.
I love the new feel of the Beetle's classic "Ticket To Ride," and everyone's favorite, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow." Don't be afraid to try something new, you might find it more familiar than expected. In fact, you might find with KJ there is something that is so familiar and inviting about her presence that you can almost hear her say, "come here sugah and give me hug." KJ Denhert gives you a huge loving hug with her music and stories of life.

| A Different Me Keyshia Cole |
| Geffen Records |
| Just Like You from Keyshia Cole created a die-hard fan in me where once there was an unsure passerby. I came to appreciate the raw and edgy stlye and the intent of Keyshia's expression on each track. Since the success of Just Like You and her reality show "The Way It Is," Keyshia has since discovered that she has more than just an explosive voice, she is a beautiful woman as well. Appropriately bring us the new release from Keyshia Cole, A Different Me.
A Different Me is a wonderful collection of easy and connective songs that almost sound as if they are performed by a different artist altogether. Keyshia Cole, my friends, will be around for quite some time so you might as well get used to her. Her willingness to try something new so early in her career, lets me know that she has learned from the mistakes and experiences that has earned Mary J. Blige her crown. The real princess of Hip Hop / Soul / R&B is finally here to take her crown, and she is Ms. Keyshia Cole.
| Forget what you've seen or known of her before, this collection is definitely a different Keyshia and how nice to know that she walks among us. The street scenarios that Keyshia illustrates are much easier to take and understand, especially since the music is not cracking your skull open while trying to decipher them. This side of Miss Cole should stay out and enjoy the fresh air with us for a while. I can't say enough about how much more balanced Keyshia Cole sounds, both musically and lyrically.
She keeps the content very real and shows us that a Ghetto Superstar can have class on the sensually satisfying "Thought You Should Know." How great to see that Amina Harris returns as strong as ever with heat infused rhymes on this CD as well. Amina's appearance is much appreciated on the hot track "No Other." One of the surprise attendees of this steamy collection is Monica. Keyshia and Monica are superbly blended on what could have been a wailing fiasco but is more of soothing Siren song. Get this CD, it is for the old Keyshia Cole fans as well as the new one that she will scoop up on her way to the top.

| Universal Mind Control Common |
| Geffen Records |
| Universal Mind Control is the new release from the smooth and stylish rapper with that sophisticated Chicago style. Common is aggressive but not scary with the messages and stories he rhymes for us. There is not a need to prove his masculinity or that he may be hood enough to stand firmly in the Hip Hop world.
There should be a bronze or even stone statue of this man placed where African American men frequent most, so there is a constant reminder of what a real man is supposed to look like. This collaboration with Pharell (N.E.R.D.) overhauls what we know of Hip Hop.
|
| |
| The recurring 80's rhythms and synthesizers in "Universal Mind Control," work so well with the educational and non-threatening rhymes that they begin to oil the gears of the brain enough to promote considerable thought. Don't think that Common is too stuffy to get down, because Universal Mind Control is designed to move both body and mind as in the duet with Cee-Lo (Goodie Mob and Gnarles Barkley).
Common's food for thought in "Changes," will not leave you bloated or heavy, but lifted and empowered. This mature style of Hip Hop is not new to the scene since we have heard this type of poetic guidance from past leaders of verse like KRS-One and Chuck-D (to name a few). It is nice to see the torch carried on and that Common is staying true to himself in the process. This is CD is fun and one you can play to get you started on a road trip, alone or with a few extra passengers.

| RuPaul appears on, "Workout" and "Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous." The remake of the Real Life 80's classic, "Send Me An Angel," keeps you moving with its beefed up rhythm and familiar melody. How could I forget the cranking Ashford and Simpson classic remake of "Found A Cure," by Plaza People.

Presents The Nutcracker
Reviewed by Emmial C. Fields
The Holiday Season is heavily upon us and though it seems to have crept up this year with the excitement of the recent election and economic issues many families have had to face this year. I found a way to beat the holiday blues whether you are single or attached, rich or poor.
| I went out for an evening at the ballet and was quickly put into the Christmas mood with Ballet South's production of The Nutcracker, choreographed and directed by Russell Sultzbach. |
|
| This student company put on a great show and (in my book) should be considered as pre-professionals of dance. I have to say that there were many pleasant surprises in this show and won't spoil them for those that wish to see this production next year. This traditional holiday favorite warmed my heart and truly entertained all of us in the audience. | |
| This young cast was joined by a dancer formally of the Central Florida area, Ryder D. Vierling, who played the roll of the prince. Since leaving Central Florida, Ryder has continued his dance education with the Virginia Schoool of the Arts and Boston Ballet School. Professionally, Mr Vierling continued his career with Charleston Ballet Theatre, Augusta Ballet, and Eugene Ballet / Ballet Idaho. Ryder showed such confidence and precision on stage and made the role of the prince look effortless. It was nice to see how much fun he and the cast were having on stage.
I've always enjoyed the party scene of The Nutcracker from the perspective of the audience as well as that of a performer. One would think that with so much happening on stage all of the subtle comedic moments would be lost. Not one giggling moment was missed by any of those who joined me in the audience. I must especially mention the performance of Jim Yount (Drosselmeyer) who gave a fresh perspective to the mysterious character. Also, Garrett Marks stole the show in every scene in which he appeared as well as Chris Petrie who played a parent in the opening and party scenes. Without a doubt, "Snow" and "Waltz of the Flowers" were executed beautifully by the ladies and gentlemen of Ballet South, but it would not be right if I did not mention the extreme cuteness of the Bon Bons Girls, Bailey Marks (Mother Ginger), and the Cherubs. This was an evening of wonderful performances by Ballet South. I recommend taking the family out to see The Nutcracker or any other holiday show in your area this or any other year. When I say "family" that includes nieces, nephews, and cousins. This show is fun for everyone and not only enriches your life with the experience of live entertainment and culture, but also creates memories that will last for a lifetime.

The Ultimate Gift |

If you are looking for that perfect last minute stocking stuffer, then don't wait any longer to go out and get The Ultimate Gift. The Ultimate Gift is a collection of Holiday songs performed by Rahsaan Patterson in a more subdued, funky style than we are used to from him. Rahsaan Patterson has crafted most of the songs on this compilation alongside Jamey Jaz. Rahsaan has always been quite instrumental in the writing of the songs on his CD's as well as for artists like: Brandy, Ledisi, Jonathan Butler, and Lalah Hathaway.
|
| |
| The forward progression and evolution of Rahsaan Patterson is quite evident on this his fifth release. The Ultimate Gift displays more of Rahsaan's musical abilities with the piano while giving his usual hint of strings to round out and support his unique voice. In addition to the original tracks, Rahsaan has included the traditional "Little Drummer Boy," Stevie Wonders's "What Christmas Means To Me," and the Paul McCartney classic "Wonderful Christmastime."
Though, I've never been a fan of the McCartney hit, Rahsaan Patterson funks it out as only he can. I urge you all to check out the track "Peace and Joy." Mr. Patterson gives new meaning to the phrase "Fa-La-La-La-La." There is so much creative genius in Rahsaan Patterson that can not be described in just one review or CD. So check out this and other releases from this artist and experience the complexity of Rahsaan Patterson.

| |
| Charisma, sensual style, and a smile that makes me jealous are just a few ways to describe the artist Kenny Lattimore. Timeless is no exception to the great amount of thought put into Kenny Lattimore's selection of songs and their execution. He and wife, Chanté Moore, seem to be the perfect ingredient for each other's lives and careers. The happy couple sings together on their releases, Things That Lovers Do and Uncovered/Covered. Both collections joined their voices harmoniously like their love for each other.
Timeless is another collection of previously recorded songs, by such unforgettable names as Elton John, The Beetles, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, and Marvin Gaye. Yes, it would have been nice to hear original material from Mr. Lattimore, but then we would not have the opportunity to experience these familiar tunes with the sensual Kenny Lattimore sparkle.
|
| |
| Dramatically, Al Green's "Something," echoes fearful news headlines setting the stage for a man weighed down and internally searching, trying to pinpoint the source of his turmoil. Raise your hand if that seems like your life. With noone to hear his questioning he converses with himself in this circular exchange. The struggle continues into the next track
"Everybody Here Wants You," wrestling this time with his self-imposed inadequacy versus his desire for the object of his affection. We usually want to be in love and will sometimes take the bitter-sweet gamble. Influenced by the previous influences of the bitter and too afraid to chance for discovery of the sweet. Gradually increasing frustration builds through every verse and explodes into the chorus as Kenny's strong falsetto expression reveals yet another dynamic depth of this multi-layered crooner.
|
| |
| "Undeniably" has always been one of my favorite Terence Trent D'arby compositions, and what a pleasant surprise that Kenny Lattimore's tailoring of every dissonant note and thoughtfully placed word suits his voice perfectly.
If you've ever heard any of Terence Trent D'arby's songs, then you'll know that Terence does not write simple songs and you'll understand why I am in awe of Kenny Lattimore's execution of such an abstract and intense creation. Timeless is the disk for the passionate lover and the intense thinker in us all.

| This is a collection of songs for those of us with a harder edge love of music. This is a cd that could not be overlooked if I am to stay true to my word of introducing sounds from all walks of life.
Fatherhood and continual success in life and his restaurants has brought Ariel Aparicio to a reflective point in his life. So why not write, sing, and share those experiences with the audience?
|
| |
| The end result is All These Brilliant Things, and what an electrifying result. Residing now in Brooklyn, Ariel retains that hint of his Cuban birth in his music while rocking out in this real alternative collection.
Ariel's willingness to share his life through music shows us that he has grown as an artist and person. His humanitarian efforts proves his growth with his donating of all proceeds from the single, "I'm The One," to The Paul Chester Children's Foundation.
|
| |
| Classic David Bowie sensuality gives body to the edgy and moving tracks. While remnants of The Cure, Icehouse, and Led Zeppelin help to make this creative artist oh so familiar to the public. Ariel Aparicio transported me back to my high school days of experiencing alternative, punk, and hard rock concerts with friends.
I would gladly attend any of Ariel Aparicio's concerts. He has already achieved that live sound on his recordings and he seems to be a fun entertainer to be in the presence of. This is evident on the track, "Hang Around," a dedication to his son. I like when and artist makes me smile while I listen to their music and I am happy that I now have Ariel Aparicio and All These Brilliant Things to feed that hard edge need in my music listening experiences. May Ariel float his way to the top with the rest of the good quality cream.

Back To Now - Labelle: Verve

Reviewed by: Emmial C. Fields, Music CorrespondentBack To Now is one of those CD's that you buy and take with you on a surprise visit to your folks, sit around and be candid with each other over a couple of games of cards with a few cousins and vittles at the dining room table. Talk about the good old days and inform them of the new.
A bridge-the-gap CD like Back To Now has the power to get our families talking again, and actually enjoying it. Try it out, what could you lose? An evening out of your life with your family that might be overdue anyway.
|
Labelle is still scorching, ladies and gentlemen!!! Back To Now has been missing on the music scene long before its release. The lyrics are spontaneously thoughtful, imaginative, and theatrical. Production and music authentically paint elaborate stage sceneries that seem to come to life and perform with the ladies. The vocals of Back To Now blend like listening to three sisters talk and finish each other's sentences instantly changing the perspective of the stories. Nona Hendricks, Patti LaBelle, and Sarah Dash are not three Divas fighting for the spotlight, they give you full harmony with appropriately placed attitude and emotion. All key elements that make this reminiscently modern release so much more enjoyable than the heavily engineered and produced groups hitting the airwaves. This music has purpose, heart, and most of all ... soul!! |

Something Else - Robin Thicke - Interscope Records

By Emmial C. Fields, Music Correspondent
Something Else is a wonderful follow-up to the Robin Thicke's 2007 release, The Evolution of Robin Thicke. By now we all know that Robin is the son of Alan Thicke, star of the hit comedy "Growing Pains." Well don't hold that against him, because this handsome soul stirrer isn't playing his father's music.
| I especially commend Robin on the instrumentation used on this album. Real saxophones and horns |
|
|
| Can you tell I have missed the full band sound in music these days? There are times when I have listened to this CD and felt like I was at a live concert. Robin Thicke exhibits such exquisite composing and writing abilities on each track.
This "Brotha" (yes I said it), is bearing it all for us to know who he is and how bad he is wanting his music to be heard and understood. Something Else has that old-school feel with a bit of something new for the youngsters to get with. |
| Like a good novel, Something Else caught my attention in the first four songs with its Marvin Gaye meets McFadden and Whitehead sound. Easy flowing rhythms with light strings accompanied by the soulful falsetto breeze of Robin's voice on the tracks, "You're My Baby" and "Ms. Harmony," feel like walking barefoot on new plush carpet.
The albums first single "Magic," is a moving discoesque track that gets the shoulders and hips moving to its beat. Don't be shocked if you find yourself smiling while you dance around your living room or in your car, that is what Something Else is all about. I know that I can be a bit biased at times, so I tried this one out with a group of older friends and then a group and younger friends and the end result was the same. We all had a really good time talking and there were smiles all around the room those that were in love smooched during the ballads while others were reminiscing and dancing on the uptempo tracks. I guess I spent too much time working in a laboratory, I'm experimenting on my friends now. |
| One track that really caught my attention and made me think and sometimes put my head down in shame, was the last track, "Tie My Hands." This collaboration of Lil Wayne and Robin Thicke was so well meshed that one can not help but get the overall message in the song. I have such a respect for Lil Wayne now.
There is no flash in this song or unnecessary carrying on, just and well-laid background with much food for thought. I am not one to get too caught up in political discussions, because there are too many opinions clouding up the truth. I will say that if you are going to vote for our next President (which I recommend doing no matter which side you are voting for), take a listen to this song. "Tie My Hands" gives the perspective of a public figure who had to deal with the tragedy of New Orleans and fall-out that resulted. |
| Overall Something Else is a colorful trip into the heart and soul of Robin Thicke and I like where it takes me. Check it out for yourself, I'm sure you will not be disappointed |

Rockferry - Duffy - A&M / Polydor, Mercury

About a month ago, I awakened to the sound of my television spewing out unfamiliar music. As I managed to become a human being again my attention was drawn to the TV screen, and this blonde bombshell sitting in the back seat of what looked like a taxi singing about when she gets to Warwick Avenue.
| She continued singing, the camera not leaving her face, and I wondered what was going to happen next. I was captivated and felt sorry for her as she began to cry and unfold her story in song.
The camera didn't leave her face as the music break played and she wiped the bleeding mascara from her face. This is the work of a captivating and truly entertaining artist. To hold the audience's attention for the duration of a song, never move the camera from your face, and be entertaining is truly a work of art.
| ||
| Long-story-short I bought the CD Rockferry by the end of the day and was caught in Duffy's rollercoaster of emotions by dinner time. | ||
| It is amazing that this young lady of 24 could grasp the concepts of Rhythm & Blues, Soul, and Rock (from a different era, no doubt). She performs all of these styles so well that you would think this collections of songs were the lost tracks of an artist from the 60's.
Rockferry is another example that you don't have to be ethnic to be able to sing what is within your soul. "Warwick Avenue," though repetitive, is a wonderfully painted story that subtly sprinkles just the right amount of emotion to get the point across.
|
| ||
| In "Stepping Stone," Duffy demands all or nothing from her lover, and means it while still being a lady. Duffy belts out the blues with passion and much intent on "Syrup and Honey" and puts you on the set of the Ed Sullivan Show with teenagers dancing around her doing the swim on the track, "Mercy." | ||

This time warp experience is one that I still take a couple times a week and still find entertaining. I would love to hear more from her and love that this time warp Goddess seems to have her feet planted firmly on the ground. Jennifer Hudson - Jennifer Hudson - Arista

Finally, the much anticipated release of Jennifer Hudson's self-titled CD is here. I must say that I am Em-pressed (a word coined by my good friend Steven Lewis when he liked the work I choreographed for him)!!! This album is an In-Your-Face American Idol episode that will be giving Simon Cowell nightmares for years to come.
| Seriously, Jennifer shows that she can balance her voice with story-line and emotion on every recording in every style on this CD. Jennifer sings so comfortably on every song that you would think that this was her fourth or fifth release.
I would not be surprised if words like Diva and Superstar are quickly attached to her name in the not so distant future. I got chills so many times listening to the strength and power on Jennifer Hudson that I thought I was coming down with the flu. God I love when music makes me feel this good. |
| The first release "Spotlight," is one of those stepping songs that adds that pep in your step either on the dancefloor or when walking to the bus stop or subway station with your earphones in your ears. It's definitely a mood shifting song with a strengthening message.
Jennifer rocks the duets and works so well with each artists she sings with. Two of my absolute favorite collaborations are those with Hip-Hop artist Ludacris and 2004 American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino. |
| Now Ladies if you didn't know before your pocketbook is not just an accessory, but a weapon as well, according to Jennifer in "Pocketbook." "Pocketbook" is a light-hearted cute song with a beat box-like rhythm that carries a message of self-respect.
Two snaps up to Missy Elliot, Fantasia Barrino, and all others involved it the obviously well-crafted "Jenni from the Hood" old soul sounding future classic, "I'm His Only Woman." Y'all better get out of her way, because Jennifer Hudson is coming through and she is not taking prisoners. She is just taking every award that is due to her and I smell a Grammy or two and even an American Music Award for this young Diva (see what I mean). Re Re might have to give the crown up after all, just not to Tina Turner, but Jennifer Hudson. Keep up the excellent work girl! |

Stubborn - elodieO (2008 - Tip of The Iceburg Records)

Welcome this rising star, elodieO, to your music collection and the music industry. I think she's going to be around for a while. Though this beautiful songstress was born in Paris, elodieO is a regular to the New York scenery, and it is no wonder.
| The creative style in which she sings, arranges, and composes most of the songs on Stubborn is reflective of such beauty. Stubborn is a collection of sophisticated, lightly textured vocals that are smoothed over electronic-pop rhythms and ambient instrumentation.
This delightful collection is just what the doctor ordered to test out that new sound system providing a non-intrusive variety of syncopated beats that do not overshadow elodieO's delicately accented voice. |
| elodieO sings in both English and French adding to the texture of Stubborn, and sucking you into her world of elegance and style. "Cuckoo," is one of the great surprises of this album. Just as you are drifting into the ambient flow of "Cuckoo," you find that your foot begins to tap and before you know it, you're on your feet again (picking up where Madonna's Ray of Light left off).
Sensuality oozes from elodieO's mouth into your ears on the tracks, "Crazy," "Take The Best," and "L'attente." Ladies and Gentlemen, you don't have to understand French to understand good music. If you don't take my word for it check out elodieO's website and see what other critics are saying about her. |

Self Portrait - Lalah Hathaway ( 2008 - Stax)

I have found my new Best Friend in Ms. Lalah Hathaway! After listening to Lalah Hathaway's fifth musical release, Self Portrait, I must say that I absolutely love every track. The young Lady has blossomed into a beautiful Goddess of Music and I am very proud of her musical and artistic growth.
| This former student of Berklee College of Music had a hand in writing every song on this compilation, making every palatable chapter of Lalah's life believable, multi-dimensional, and a true Self Portrait.
Lalah's writing and musical collaborations with Rex Rideout, Kenneth Crouch, Michael Ripoll, Sandra St. Victor, Rahsaan Patterson, and several other talented artists, gives each song the perfect ingredients for all to enjoy. After working with so many great artists in the span of her career, it is evident that Lalah has been taking very good notes.
| Ms. Hathaway's voice hypnotizes to the capacity of the late Luther Vandross, especially on songs like: "On Your Own," "That Was Then," and "For Always." Lalah acoustically uplifts you on, "Breathe." She becomes a catalyst for thought with the song "Tragic Inevitability."
The funky perspective that Rahsaan Patterson adds to the songs, "Let It Go" and "Little Girl," (mentioning her father the late Donny Hathaway) lets us know that Lalah puts things in perspective and moves past them without regret on her life's journey. Every resonating, smooth, and soulful note that floats out of her throat is never over done, but perfectly balanced with instrumental confirmation that Lalah Hathaway is here to stay. Did I mention that the bonus for getting Self Portrait is the feeling of having a great conversation and a loving hug from your Best Friend Lalah Hathaway.
