In this day and age, as soon as a recording artist has a hit selling CD, has become a millionaire, the music industry and the media starts to call them, "Diva". It's not something that Beyonce, Rihanna, Mariah, Ms. Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton have labeled themselves, seriously anyway.
|
Now the older, tested and found true, divas like Ms. Diana Ross, the Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha, Ms. Dionne Warwick, Ms. Tina Turner, have earned that respect. However, there's another diva that many of our younger (and maybe some of the older) readers may not know about. The diva's name is Ms. Leontyne Price. |
| Born Mary Violet Leontyne Price was born in Laurel , Mississippi, on February 10, 1927. Her parents were married for 13 years before the diva was born. Being an only child had it's benefits, since she was the apple of her parent's eye. Leontyne's mother had a beautiful singing voice, but it was when Leontyne, at the age of 10, was taken on a school outing, to hear another legend, the great Marian Anderson sing, Leontyne said it was an inspirational experience. The seed was planted.
A white woman by the name of Mrs. Chisholm, who employed Leontyne's aunt as a laundress, encouraged her to play piano but heard her sing and immediately realized that Leontyne's blessing, gift was to sing. With the help of the Chisholm's and Paul Robeson, the black actor and bass singer, a benefit concert was had, to raise funds for Leontyne. She win a scholarship to attend Juillard School in NYC. |

Many of you may recall that in June 2008, I interviewed Ms. Lola , owner of NYC's famous Soul Food Restaurant. At that time, a SoHo neighborhood action team was fighting tooth and nail, in hope to kick "Lola's" out of its mostly "Lilly" white community.
Unfortunately due to this team's actions and the economy, the fight to keep Lola's open has been lost.

Below is a note that I received from Lola and Tom, regarding this eatery.

I can't believe that Vivica A. Fox has decided to lend her name to the Psychic Friends Network. First Vivica played a detective on the Lifetime channel, but it was cancelled after a few runs. Then Vivica had a reality television show, about finding the best "dresser", or something like that.
| Now she's starring, per the advertisement, as the new psychic friends host. Who's Vivica's manager? Wasn't it a few years ago, that Ms. Fox said that she wanted to be the black, "Julia Roberts?" |
| I can't imagine Ms. Roberts allowing herself or lending her celebrity to become a laughing joke in the entertainment industry. Surely the nighttime television show host will have a lot of funny material on Vivica's behalf. When Ms. Warwick was once the celebrity host, it took years to live that down.
And Ms. Cleo, it was discovered was not real, even the Jamaican sing-a-long accent in her voice was fake. Seems like things for Vivica haven't gone right, since the breakup with 50 Cent. Ms. Fox is a wonderful actress, perhaps she needs a new management team. You read it here at GBMNews.com |

I've always thought that a re-make of "All About Eve" with a black cast, would be an excellent movie with Diana Ross starring in the Bette Davis part, "Margo Channing". I've also commented on how we as a people of color have not tapped into our rich culture and that we should use our seasoned actors, actresses, singer etc. in our entertainment productions. It's like there's one group of actors that are used in every film, its time to improve and change.
| Well according to Black Voices at AOL, the Director, script writer and actor, Mr. Tyler Perry is trying to get Ms. Diana Ross to star in one of his next movies. I think it's a wonderful, if Mr. Perry can make this happen, as we haven't seen the diva in a movie on the big screen in a long while. It's been said that movie parts for people of color are far and between but as the diva as said, "You have to create your own destiny". |

Looking beautiful and well rested, Diva Whitney Houston performed at the Clive Davis "Pre-Grammy party and she appeared at the Grammy's the following day to give Jennifer Hudson her R&B Best Female Album award.
| Now for those of you who was not invited to the Gala, like myself, can view Ms. Whitney singing, "I'm Every Woman" go to YouTube, type in her name. | ![]() |
| Also on YouTube is her new single, to be released shortly is called, Calling You Tonight" and it sounds like a lyric genius, Ne-Yo composition. The other songs on YouTube are "Like I Never Left" with Akon and "I Look To You.", a R. Kelly song. | |
| Promotional video | |
|
Now I love Whitney, but it appears that the voice of yesterday, has gone, never to return. Or will it? Many may remember when Ms. Natalie Cole had her issues, it was a while before the strength and beauty of her voice returned. I pray that this is the same for Nippy. You can also hear the song on YouTube. Whenever this soon to be release CD is in the stores, I'm sure it will break a lot of release date records for Ms. Whitney is a star and all of us love a "come back" story. Sources claim that Ms. Beyonce Knowles is up for the role of the Black Panther's activist, Ms. Angela Davis. Now I know the readers are probably wondering why I'm so hard on Beyonce? I'm not, its just that I find it unfortunate that there's so much talent within our black community, yet white America aka the producers have indicated that we only have a few with triple threat talents.
| Firely Angela Davis |
| Again, Ms. Knowles is extremely ambitious but I would ask that anyone associated with this project should do some research as Ms. Davis, our feminist, is an important part of our black American history.
When I heard about Beyonce playing the "Etta James" role, I screamed no! I wasn't sure about the Dream Girls role, but how hard could that be. Now its rumored that Beyonce may be offered the "Angela Davis" role. Try as she might, Beyonce will not get an Oscar for her acting. She is a singer who wants to act. Many before her, took baby steps, not everyone can be Diana Ross, as her performance in "Lady Sings The Blues" should have earned her an Oscar. As for the "Angela Davis" look, Beyonce already did that in the Austin Power movie. To the producers of this penning' Black Panther" film, do what you did with Ms. Jennifer Hudson, open that door for a new, fresh, undiscovered talent. You read it here at GBMNews.com |
Speaking with Singing Legend, Bettye Lavette

By Entertainment Correspondent, John Frazier
At the end of January 2009, I wrote an article for GBMNews, on singer, recording artist, Ms. Bettye LaVette. I was so moved by her two huge performances. The first on the "Kennedy Center Honors" and then Obama Inaugural:
| "this great lady of soul took the stage and in the opposite direction entering onto the stage was Superstar Rock and Pop singer, Jon Bon Jovi. Ms. LaVette didn't miss a beat as she roared, "I was born by a river…" The first line of the Sam Cooke classic, "A Chance Is Gonna Come".
Jon Bon Jovi looked honored to share the stage with this diva. But who is she? No, it wasn't Ms. Etta James. Not Ms. Tina Turner, No, not Denise LaSalle or any other blues and soul female singer. It's like Ms. Bettye LaVette was being re-discovered by a totally new generation". |
| After writing the article I thought that I would reach out to Ms. LaVette's "people", her management, perhaps I would be granted the honor of interviewing her. It was a shot in the dark, but who knows.
Well, to be delight and surprise, I received an email stating that I could, in fact, interview the R&B legend, Ms. Bettye LaVette. I wasn't sure what I should ask. I'm sure she's been asked every question in the book and this information could be found on the internet. The prior evening, I went to bed early, as I wanted my mind to be clear. Another dream was about to come true.

By Entertainment Correspondent, John Frazier
Now I wont tell you so, but I mentioned months before Ms. Beyonce Knowles was to start filming the "Cadillac Records" movie, that I felt the actress choice to play Diva, Ms. Etta James didn't make sense. I felt that Beyonce was definitely the wrong choice. Hollywood had chosen the singer because of her star power and not her acting ability. Then at the inauguration party when President Obama danced with his wife, Michelle, it was Beyonce who sang Ms. Etta's signature song, "At Last".
| My telephone rang a few times and the caller's questioned, "Why isn't Ms. Etta James" singing this song for the President?" | ![]() |
| My answer was, "I don't know". Well the sh*t has hit the fan. Ms. Etta James is speaking out, and it ain't pretty. Ms. Etta, 71, has threatened to kick Beyonce's ass. Yep, you read it right. And she's not happy about our first black President either.
Words spoken from Ms. Etta, while in her Seattle concert : "You guys know your president, right? You know the one with the big ears?" she said to the crowd, unsure of what lay ahead. "Wait a minute, he ain't my president, he might be yours, he ain't my president. You know that woman he had singing for him, singing my song -- she's going to get her ass whipped." She continued: "The great Beyonce. I can't stand Beyonce," she told the crowd. "She has no business up there, singing up there on a big ol' president day, gonna be singing my song that I've been singing forever."
| Interesting it seems that Ms. Beyonce has been stepping on a few toes. There was the Dream Girl movie, which Ms. Ross, the classy diva that she is, has remained silent about her real opinion about this movie. | ![]() |
| But many will remember that she was not happy about it, when Ms. Sheryl Lee Ralph played the character on Broadway. Then the Queen of Soul, Ms. Aretha Franklin became upset when Beyonce called Ms. Tina Turner the Queen and not the Queen of Rock & Soul. Now its Ms. Etta James who's not happy.
But now it's a new day, February 6th, and Ms. Etta James is singing a different tune as she released a statement saying that she was just playing around, and that she's has no problem with Beyonce. Such is life for the rich, very rich and famous. You read it here at GBMNews.com

Recording Artists: ANJULIE, "Boom" Remixes

By Entertainment Correspondent, John Frazier
Many of you may remember in November 2008, I wrote an article on the artist named, "Anjulie". Just to remind you……………
| Finally a new talent with a new sound. Anjulie, the beautiful singer, poet, songwriter and guitar player comes from Toronto, Canada and now lives in Los Angeles. It's hard to define her sound, since it's a combination of everything you've heard before and yet it's a totally brand new sound.
Her music is called alternative/pop but vocally it's something that artist like the late Minnie Ripperton or Syreeta Wright would have recorded. It's an undefined sound, as its not black or white. It's soulful, pop, folk, Caribbean and indie as it doesn't belong to any particular genre. |
| Perhaps that doesn't make sense until you hear her sing. One of her compositions called "Boom", once released, will be the best new song of the year. But don't take my word for it, go to her "my space" site, I'm sure you will agree with me. And while you are there, check out some of her other songs. "The Heat", "Love Songs" and "The Rain" are just as special and unique. But there's a song that's not on her website called, "Day Will Soon Come", which I had the pleasure of getting a copy of and trust me, it's HOT!
Hopefully Anjulie is in the studio, finishing up her first of many, CD's. In the meantime, go to one of the sites mentioned below, and give the sister a listen. And once she "blows up" and as she becomes "large", you will be able to say that you already knew about her. |

Born in Barbados and named Robyn Rihanna Fenty it appears that her life has been blessed from the beginning. The gifted singer, model, fashion designer and Grammy award winner, it appears is getting the respect earned with her third CD released, "Good Girl Gone Bad".
| Now I must admit, I wasn't such as fan, and considered it music for the younger generation, age range from infant to perhaps 35 years old. As I felt that anyone older would probably feel like a dirty old man on the dance floor with 18 year olds. However, as a passenger in my sister's vehicle, listening to the music, I heard a song called, "Don't Stop The Music". I found myself moving to the music, and immediately questioned, "Who is that?!" The music reminded me of the days when I would break out in a sweat on the dance floor. The answer was, "That's Rihanna!". |
| I was totally surprised as I found myself finally understanding why so many had become a fan of the beauty. Prior to that moment, I thought that she was probably another Madonna or Brittany Spears, dipped in color. Then I read articles where it claimed that she said she wanted to be the next Madonna. Reading that turned my stomach.
But now after 3 smash CD's and pushed into super star status, I've become a Rihanna fan as well and have realized that good music is good music, it doesn't matter the age. Now the "Good Girl Gone Bad The Remixes", has been released featuring some of the world's greatest DJ's. The first cut is Umbrella featuring Jay-Z. mixed by Paul Emanuel and Seamus Haji. Followed by other DJ greats such as Jody den Broeder, The Wideboys, Tony Moran and Warren Riggs, Soul Seekerz, K-Klassic, Moto Blanco and Lindbergh Palace.
|
| Jokingly, after I'd heard "Don't Stop The Music", I said to a friend of mine, once you have the gay community behind you and your music, you are guaranteed a platinum CD. The song is so gay, something that you would hear at a "White Party" or "Black Party". Well, "Good Girl Gone Bad" has gone double platinum. And now there's the new release of "Girl Gone Bad", The Remixes" . This is the third CD installment, on the "Good Girl Gone Bad", first the original CD released on June 5, 2007, then the "Girl Gone Gone Bad: Reloaded" which included 3 new songs, this was released on June 17, 2008. And now the "Good Girl Gone Bad -The Remixes". Talk about working a product and it's working as the fans can't get enough! It seems that whatever this young "diva in waiting" touches turns to, should I say it? Platinum. Rihanna has also earned three Grammy nominations for "Good Girl….", well you know the title already.
It's also rumored that she's dating singer, dancer, actor, Chris Brown. Her success has enabled her to become a "Cover Girl" and "Gucci" spokesperson. And guess what? She's only 20 years old. If you want more Rhianna, click below: You read it hear at GBMNews.com |

If Lil Wayne is on your CD, you know that you are HOT or you are the next HOT thing. Well, the latest of bold, sexy, beautiful, mature, in control lady's is Ms. Keri Hilson. Her "Turnin Me On" smash hit has been re-mixed & released with 6 different cuts, starting with # 1. Original clean cut., 2.
| The Original Dirty cut, then 3 and 4 are edited takes of 1 and 2. Number 5 is the original instrumental cut, ending with # 6, original a capella cut. This re-mix release is a DJ's dream as there's nothing else you can do to improve on what's perfect. | |
| But the Decatur, GA born, Keri is not an overnight success as she's been behind the scene in the music industry. According to her bio, she's a songwriter, a vocal arranger and is a part of a five-person production/songwriter team known as the Clutch. | |
| She's studied piano, but her true love is singing. As for her lyric skills, she is responsible for the Mary J. Blige, "Take Me As I Am", Ciara's "Like A Boy", Omarion's, "Ice Box" and the Pussycat Dolls, "Wait A Minute", to name a few. Now she's stepping up to the mic, showing the world that she has what it takes.
I'm not sure that you can appreciate the 26 year old's voice on "Turnin Me On", as it's more of a club song but I have a feeling that once the dust has settled, Ms. Hilson is going to surprise all of us, as she shows us what she's made of. Keri is featured on a Chris Brown song, called, "Superhuman". You can find these on YouTube. Watch out Ashanti, Beyonce and all of the other divas in training, the beautiful hazel eyed triple talent is ready to stake her claim. We hear the rumors. Whispers, stares, lies and truths, but its finally happened, Kelly Rowland of "Destiny's Child" released a statement "Mathew Knowles has been a positive influence in my career. I have had great success under his guidance -- both as a member of Destiny's Child and with my solo projects. Although we have decided to part ways professionally, the Knowles family and the entire Music World Entertainment team will always be my family."
| But is it the whole truth? Many may remember when Diana Ross left the Supremes for a solo career, she went from star to superstar. Beyonce played the Diana Ross character in the movie, "Dreams Girls", yet Beyonce's career reminds one of the mega talented, Ms. Diana Ross.
Someone mentioned that Beyonce, now a superstar in her own right, is the Diana Ross of this generation and her father is the Berry Gordy. Not relationship wise but career wise, "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". But you know that Beyonce and dad may part ways career wise like Ms. Ross split from Motown's legend and founder, Mr. Gordy. If this happens, remember you heard it from me.
| Well perhaps Kelly Rowland saw the writing on the wall. Mr. Knowles is concentrating, focusing, devoting his time and energy into the family business, his two daughters.
And Ms. Rowland needs to have someone to focus on her career and her best interest. |
![]() |
| "Destiny's Child", the group, will still be managed by Mathew Knowles. Kelly is currently working on a new project and will remain with Columbia Records, which is an extremely smart move.
Well Kelly work your ass off on your next project. Everyone will be waiting and listening. Kelly reminds me of Mary Wilson, the original one left standing. Good luck to you, my sister girl. You read it here at GBMNews.com
"I'm sorry", Tom Hanks

By Entertainment Correspondent, John Frazier
It appears that Mr. Tom Hanks has had second thoughts about Proposition 8 and the Mormon church comment. Here is his statement:
| Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California's Proposition 8 as "un-American." I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination. But everyone has a right to vote their conscience - nothing could be more American.
To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to Proposition 8 are "un-American" creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use "un- American" lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have. Tom Hanks. |
![]() |
| Sounds like Mr. Hanks is feeling remorse, however I do believe that his heart, his opinion was said because he believes that all people should have the same rights, the freedom, to express ourselves.
Basically, this is what Mr. Hanks was trying to get across. And I agree with him, in that marriage is more than male to female, it's a bond between two people on a spiritual level, when two people fall in love. Perhaps, Mr. Hanks was getting a lot of heat just because he expressed himself. You read it hear at GBMNews.com
"Prayers for Bobby" Starring Sigouney Weaver

While watching the View and enjoying the continued celebration, the day after, for our new President Obama, actress Siqourney Weaver was one of show's guest. This fine actress has an impressive body of film work, yet most know her for the "Alien" movies, of which the second "Alien" feature earned her an Oscar nomination. However, the reason I thought this article might be important to some of our many readers is because of the subject matter.
| On January 24th at 9PM ET/PT, the Lifetime channel will premiere Ms. Weaver's new made for television feature, titled, "Prayers for Bobby". The story line: It's in the 1970's, where a deeply religious suburban housewife and mother discovers and struggles to accept that her son, Bobby is gay. |
| I'm sure this topic should step on a few toes, since in our community, the black community, there are many who are struggling with being true to themselves. Most reasons are because the family has not embraced and learned to love their son, daughter, sister, brother or parent unconditionally. Many times the person trying to understand the gay culture will hide behind the King James bible. |
| Therefore, creating an atmosphere of self-hatred, confusion, lack of self-respect and, a need of seeking love in all the wrong places, will develop for that individual who's trying to understand why he or she was born this way. We are taught that we serve and worship a forgiving and mighty God, that we all fall short and its by His grace that we are saved and yet many times the one who's preaching is also promotion hatred from the pulpit and into the hearts of its followers. |

| Hide Nothing |
This recording artist is coming to the table, totally honest, real and proud. "Hide Nothing", a perfect title for this great easy listening new CD. According to his bio, after doing some life and soul searching he came to terms with being gay.
| When being interviewed, Matt had this to say: "They rather awkwardly asked me to leave, citing some bullshit Bible verse from 2nd Timothy. They had a hard time kicking me out, though. I'd done my homework and invited them to debate their position that I was somehow "living in sin." Thanks to the writing of Prof. Elaine Pagels (The Gnostic Gospels, The Origin of Satan) and Daniel Helminiak (What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality) I was more than equipped to educate my fellow Christians. We tackled every verse they could find about it and my answers made more sense every time." Matt feels that this experience empowered him. Knowledge is power.
| |
| From Kansas he headed to San Francisco where in 1998 he auditioned and joined the "Chanticleer", a elite professional classical men's ensemble which consisted 12 men. After joining, he toured the world for 150 days a year performing in different parts of the world. While singing with them, they recorded 7 albums and 2 of them won Grammy's. | |
| Because of this experience it helped to develop his unique singing style which is almost heavenly. His vocals are tenor/soprano in range, which both ranges are pure, strong, controlled and priceless. | ![]() |
| At times sounding folk with a lot of soul, accompanied by beautiful strings, piano, harps and originality. Lyrics are sang and come from the heart. I'm sure Grammy's are coming his way. Each song is different, creative and has a piece of Matt attached. A pleasure to listen to again, again and again.

Fans have waited for years in hope for the reunion of Patti LaBelle, Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx known as "LaBelle". A few months ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Ms. Sarah Dash for GBMNews.com and I must say that it was one of my hi-lights being associated with GBMNews.
Well the Divas, "Labelle" have released a single off of the CD ,"Back To Now" titled "Superlover", and believe me, the "children" are going to be partying to each of the 10 re-mixes.
| Celebrity remixed by the music industry's best, Mark Picchiotti, Craig C., Matthias "Matty" Heilbronn, Lost Daze and Rich Morel work their own personal magic and bring out the best in each set.
When I spoke with Ms. Dash in November 2008, she shared her opinion on why, we, the gay community love them so much:
| John: There's always been interest in the group, Labelle, especially in the gay community. Why do you think this is? | ||||||||||||
| Sarah: Because Labelle was not full of structure and society's plan on what you should do and what you should say. We started out as a very formulated group, "Patti Labelle and The Bluebells" wearing the same wigs, same gowns, same hair-do's, but there was an edge to our work even then, because we did not sing the normal, "love you baby, shoo- bop, my baby" we would only sing standards like, "You Will Never Walk Alone", "Oh Danny Boy", it was a bit out of the norm. Then when we transformed from "Patti Labelle" to "Labelle" again we knocked what the traditional folks at the record companies expected for females, on how they should look, how they should stand, what styles, again, we took our look, took off the same wigs, took off the same gowns and shoes and we became individuals within the same structure.
I think that leads for creativity and the gay community, being the artist that they are, they always keep you on the top of your game. We introduced them to a new way of looking at females and they gave us back their opinions.
| Well Labelle fans, the Divas are again, showing appreciation for their fans by releasing this set that will have you partying way after the "black" and the "white" party's are over. Some of the cuts are more "club" beat while the other's have a "house" feel. One word comes to mind, "Fierce!"
In the meantime, Labelle may be coming to your neck of the woods, see schedule below:

By Entertainment Correspondent, John Frazier
If you are a fan of the cable channel, "Showtime", you already know about the hit series, "Big Love". The show is about a polygamist living in Mormon country, Utah, who has three wives. There are some Mormon's who still practice this, yet legally it's against the law to have more than one wife per man.
| Mr. Tom Hanks could not restraint himself when he spoke about the Mormons and the Mormon Church, as he claims that discrimination and used their money to make Prop-8 happen. According to Popeater.com, "There are a lot of people |
| A little bit of light can be shed and people can see who's responsible and that can motivate the next go around of our self correcting constitution and hopefully we can move forward instead of backwards. So let's have faith in not only the American, but Californian constitutional process", spoken by Mr. Tom Hanks. |

Now I know brothers may think that I should "man up" by watching about 40 men run around and try to catch a pig skin ball. And then the players will be allowed to pat each other on the booty. Mmm, wait a minute, maybe I should watch the whole game. You read it at GBMNews.com
