Are You Ready For a Brand New Beat?

People all around the world seem ready for a brand new beat -- be it Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Hussein Obama, the global press and the most ordinary man and woman on the street looked forward to the proverbial and assumed paradigmatic shift that would inform U.S. politics and governance with a woman president or head of state of African descent. With congratulations in order for Senator Obama - let's hope our optimism is indeed well founded.

 

Barack's own words recognize that, regardless of November's outcome, his mere presumed nomination as the Democratic candidate for president mirrors what he believes millions of Americans hope for - change. Clinton supporters should not be angry and the media, pundits and others ought not pander to their emotional response. After all they too want change. But retaliatory measures - such as not voting for Barack or jumping on the McCain bandwagon - only reflect the same ill-bred, self-entitled irrationality periodically exhibited by both Clintons at various points of the campaign. More importantly, the divisive tone, both along class and racial lines cleaved by the Clinton camp will only become more pronounced if meaningful and sincere unification does not occur within the Democratic Party.

For better or worse, what is striking is the set of contradictions that will remain in place no matter how hopeful, seemingly sincere or united in appearance Democrats pronounce themselves to be. If we are to believe the vision of reality television provides, it isn't simply the angry, white (ostensibly working class) male we have to worry about but the angrier, white woman (of any stripe) who will pointedly hoist social and political Molotov Cocktails at the rest of us.
