Tyler Perry Opens Up About Childhood Beatings and Molestation

Turning 40 and preparing for the release of the much anticipated film "Precious", filmmaker Tyler Perry candidly wrote about the abuse and molestation he experienced as a child on his website Saturday evening.
| After watching the film, Perry wrote that he “realized at that moment that a large part of my childhood had just played out before my eyes.”
Precious is a film produced by Perry and Oprah Winfrey chronicling the life and experiences of an illiterate African-American 16-year-old girl that experiences constant abuse from her mother and is pregnant for a second time by her own father. "I'm tired of holding this in,” Perry writes. “I don't know what to do with it anymore, so, I've decided to give some of it away." Perry begins with how his mother tried and failed at leaving his abusive father and recounts a graphic list of abuse and beatings he experienced. For his love of reading and writing Perry says he received nothing but merciless verbal abuse from his drunken father.

Festival of LGBT-themed dramas, musicals, comedies and documentary ends October 8thBy Sr. Correspondent, D. Kevin McNeir
Sometimes it's hard to find a movie that deals with one of America's more controversial lifestyles - the LGBT mantra. Maybe it's because producers are a little squeamish or because theatres don't want to promote "those kinds of shows." Then again, it could just be a simple case of supply and demand - recall your fundamentals from Economic 1010.
All that aside, every fall in the city of Atlanta, the good, bad and the ugly associated with living in this world as a SGL man or woman is tackled in the form of drama and comedy at the annual OUT on Film Festival which celebrates "Pride at the Movies."
| "Rivers Wash Over Me" by director John G. Young and Atlanta producer Dexter Davis | |
| The festival, which opened on October 2nd with the hilarious comedy "The Big Gay Musical" and a documentary honoring the life and works of the late Allen Thornell, an Atlanta activist, runs through October 8th. All shows are held at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema. The notion behind any film festival that targets a specific demographic is that enough people will attend the viewings so that those folks with the money are persuaded to invest in making the production available to a larger audience in venues around the country. In addition, many of the producers, directors and actors associated with the films are on hand for question and answer forums. |

Grittv discussion on the impact of the film "Bruno"

Sacha Baron Cohen’s new film, Bruno, premiered in theaters on Friday to mixed reviews. Several were offended by the admittedly provocative antics of Cohen onscreen. But was it offending the wrong people?
Scores of people from the gay community have voiced their distaste for Cohen’s depiction of homosexuals in the movie, fearing that his behavior perpetuates common stereotypes and strengthens homophobic tendencies. A scene where Bruno treats a baby like an accessory has especially angered some, in a time when the gay community is having difficulty gaining adoption rights.
Others disagree, saying Bruno’s character is an obvious cartoon version of the ridiculous stereotypes that have been wrongly placed on homosexuals.
But in the end, Bruno is a comedy, so is it funny? And if so, do we laugh more from satire or sheer shock value?
Here to discuss these questions and more we have Richard Kim of The Nation, Antoine B. Craigwell of GBMNews.com, and Shawn Edwards creator of www.iloveblackmovies.com and contributor at FoxTV.
GRITtv with Laura Flanders airs Mon-Thurs, at 8pm & 1 am ET, on Free Speech TV (DISH Network ch. 9415), on public stations and online at www.grittv.org and www.firedoglake.com/lauraflanders
Set in Harlem, Blueprint explores the boundaries of Black male sexuality

(New York, NY) - Two young men, fresh faced and bristling with energy and testosterone, explored and tested the waters of their attraction and sexuality in Blueprint. Billed as a feature film, Blueprint, shown at the recently concluded HomoHarlem Film Festival, was a full fledged production.
| ||
| Shannon-Butts, a fashion editor with Glamour magazine, said the motivation for becoming involved with the movie stemmed from what he saw as the lack of multi-dimensional gay Black characters in films and the notion that gays are seen as overwhelmingly sexual as opposed to educated, cultured, worldly and political. "I wanted to show contemporary images of young men living in the city, going to college, dealing with gender identity, being happy and exploring new things and people," said Shannon-Butts.
Blueprint, already screened in over 25 film festivals across Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America, was produced by Trevite Willis, featured Blake Young-Fountain as Keith, and Damion Lee as Nathan. The film was shot in 2005, mostly in Harlem and at a lake location in Sullivan County over a period of three weeks, and as a low budget independent project, under $100,000, it was largely financed by Willis and Shannon-Butts, with additional help from the Jerome Foundation and Reel Affirmations/1in10.

In a housing project located on the outskirts of Paris renamed "100% Arabica" by its inhabitants, African immigrants live side by side. The residents are united by their struggle for recognition in a society where immigrants are often regarded as second-class citizens. In a world of exiles, poverty is the common denominator. Against this backdrop, director Zemmouri has brought together two of the biggest and most charismatic stars of the cross-cultural musical form known as Rai, Cheb Mami and Khaled, who play the leaders of a band called Rap Oriental. As the band of musicians starts to gain in popularity, the Imam of the local mosque (Mouss) tries to destroy them by stirring up racial and cultural tensions. However, no one can stop the infectious popularity of the songs in this story of music triumphing over bigotry and violence.

The Dominican Republic has beautiful beaches, beautiful people, and a little something called "Sanky Panky," which female tourists might want to stay away from. In this musical comedy starring the charismatic Fausto Mata, his attempts at getting foreign women to fall in love with him in order to procure a visa to the United States have hilarious results. A huge hit in both the Dominican Republic and the Dominican communities abroad, SANKY PANKY is a humorous look at the little-known phenomena of seducing travelers for personal gain. Lou Rawls biopic to be played by Isaiah Washington

According to "Black Voices Blog", former "Grey's Anatomy" star, Isaiah Washington will star in the Lou Rawls biopic. Perhaps this will be the break that Mr. Washington needs after it was said that he made racist comments about one of "Grey"s fellow actors, who happens to be gay. Pathway Entertainment has acquired the script 'Through the Eyes of a Son,' which was written by his son Lou Rawls Jr.
| ||
| I'm sure that many of Mr. Lou Rawls fans will be surprised to learn that he had so many more talents. He's one of the few performers, who was indeed a perfect role model. You never heard gossip about the man who once sang with the great Sam Cooke. After he continued moving forward as a solo act, singing gospel, jazz, R&B and pop and became one of the classiest, top-drawer performers of his generation and generations to come.
It's wonderful that our stories, people of color, are being told. The Richard Pryor and the Marvin Gaye stories are being made. It's been said for years that Ms. Pearl Bailey's story is in the works and that Ms. Queen Latifah may be cast as the gifted performer. I can't wait to see some of our heroes on the big screen. Ms. Jada Pinkett Smith has been quoted as saying, "I definitely respect and understand people's curiosity, but people, they have to trust me when I speak on my truth...If I say to you, 'I don't have an open marriage,' 'No, we're not gay,' and you don't trust that, well then there's nothing that I really have to say to anybody about anything, because at the end of the day, I'm living my life, and I'm happy."
| For years its been said that Will and Jada have an open marriage, in other circles its been said that Will and Jada are both gay or bi-sexual and have a "don't ask, don't tell" relationship.
Now we know if Will and Jada decided to come out of the closet, if they are gay, it would destroy the careers of two beautiful, talented people, especially in the black community. Many of us are so beaten down with religion, and are hooked on "God didn't create Adam and Steve but Adam and Eve…." Our community hasn't learned how to love unconditionally. To many in Hollywood, the same sex thing and the bi-sexual thing has been replaced with the labeled as being "sexual". However, whoever's doing who, it shouldn't really matter if you enjoy the talent of that person. Black people wake up! And I agree with Ms. Jada, she's living and loving her life and she's happy. "THE DARK SIDE OF THE RAINBOW”: A Video Exposing Domestic Violence in Same-Gender-Loving Relationships
- By Kheven LaGrone
- Published 03/22/2009
- Film
-
Rating:

Reviewed byKheven LaGroneThe recent frenzy about Chris Brown and Rihanna showed how the media often sensationalizes domestic violence.
Hot gossip sells. Under the guise of “meaningful dialogue,” talk show hosts titillate with provocative, yet shallow, questions like: How could such a monster (referring to the male celebrity) be created? Does she love herself? Does she love her body? Will she go back to him?
For African-Americans, the following questions might also arise: Do Black men hate Black women? Do Black women hate themselves?
(I heard many commentators say “but she was so pretty.” As if to say, they would have understood his beating her if she had not been “pretty.”)
| |||||
|
C. D. Kirven’s video short (14 min.) titled “The Dark Side of the Rainbow” helps start that radical discussion. It is a factual video about same-gender domestic violence. “The Dark Side of the Rainbow” presents domestic violence outside of the usual discussion of male-female power disparity. Instead, we would have to focus on love and trust. Love is trust. Home is a safe space. Domestic violence violates both trust and home. Texas-born C. D. Kirven cleverly captured “The Dark Side of the Rainbow” on a cell phone. What medium better captures the urgency and terror of being abused in one’s own home and by someone loved and trusted? While being domestically abused, one cannot run to one’s partner for solace. One cannot escape home for safety. Love and home become places of fear and danger.
| |||||
![]() | |||||
|
In an e-mail, Kirven, an African American lesbian, tells me that she chose the title because “we think the rainbow—the gay symbol—is all about fun and parties but there is also a dark side that no one likes to talk about such as abuse or racism within the GLBT community.” According to Kirven, domestic violence is “deadly to the GLBT community.” She believes that a same-gender loving person may be denied emergency services and protective orders due to homophobia. The person may feel trapped into his or her violent relationship and “so they go20back to the abuse and die.” |

Perhaps this will be killing two birds with one stone. What do I mean? Well if you saw the movie, "Dreamgirls" you know that Eddie Murphy should have gotten an Oscar for his powerful, talented performance. Rumor has it that Fox Searchlight will invest the 25 million into big screen bio of the Late Great Mr. Richard Pryor, titled, "Is It Something I Said?"
|
| |
| Now there's a search for some of Pryor's friends, (to be played in the movie), like Redd Foxx, Flip Wilson and Moms Mabley. I hope that this project will focus on how he became Mr. Richard Pryor. As his mother was a street walking woman, his grandmother was a Madame and his father was a pimp. He was exposed to drugs, sex, domestic violence, self hatred and misplaced pride at a very young age. Also the many lovers of his life, the most famous would be Ms. Pam Grier. And we must not forget his children. Rain, his daughter, wrote her story and told of her relationship with her dad.
It should be ready for the big screen in 2010. I have a feeling that we have only began to see how talented Mr. Murphy is as he matures into who he's suppose to be. You read it here at GBMNews.com

| When Mr. West was interviewed by the "Details" magazine reporter, he claims that his success is due to his being a sex addict. | ![]() |
| When questioned about his own sexuality, Kanye replied, "I like to embody titles or words that have negative connotations, and explain why that's good. "Take the word gay. Like, in hip-hop, that's a negative thing, right? "But in the past two, three years, all the gay people I've encountered have been, like, really, really, extremely dope. "I haven't gone to a gay bar, nor do I ever plan to.
But where I would talk to a gay person, the conversation would be mostly around art or design, it'd be really dope. "From a design standpoint, kids' will say, 'Dude, those pants are gay." But if it's good, good, good fashion-level, design-level stuff, where it's on a higher level than the average commercial design stuff, it's gay people that do that. "I think that should be said as a compliment. Like, 'Dude, that's so good it's almost gay.'"
| On E News, Kanye said, "People ask me a lot about my drive". "I think it comes from, like, having a sexual addiction at a really young age. Look at the drive that people have to get sex - to dress like this and get a haircut and be in the club in the freezing cold at 3am, the places they go to pick up a girl. If you can focus the energy into something valuable, put that into work ethic…" What? | |

Dustin Lance Black - Gay Oscar Winner - Speaks to the World

The extremely gifted brother of lighter skin is a screenwriter, film director and producer. He's currently one of the producers for the HBO hit, "Big Love" and he's gay. He also received an Oscar for "Best Original Screenplay" for the film, "Milk".
| According to his bio: Dustin's journey, born Dustin Lance Black, is an interesting one, as he grew up Mormon. During his acceptance speech, he addressed this, saying that God loves you, no matter who you are, no matter the life style. As a child, he told himself, "I'm going to hell. And if I ever admit it, I'll be hurt, and I'll be brought down" when he found himself attracted to a boy in his neighborhood at the age of six or seven.
He said that his "acute awareness" of his sexuality made him dark, shy and at times suicidal, and he only came "out" after leaving high school. Many faiths believe that you are going to hell because of your sexuality, Dustin wanted the confused gay kids to know that they are not alone. |
| Dustin stood in front of the world as he spoke, "I want to thank my mom who has always loved me for who I am, even when there was pressure not to. But most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he'd want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches or by the government or by their families that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours. Thank you, thank you, and thank you God for giving us Harvey Milk". |
|
|
|
People in the audience, the Hollywood community listened and many had tears in their eyes. Perhaps that mother, that father, who's stopped loving their gay son or daughter realizes that to be gay is normal, its not a sickness. It's not a choice, like deciding on a pair of shoes. Being gay, for many is a difficult lifestyle. To be gay, one has to be strong, stronger than our straight counterpoints realize. Sean Penn won for best actor for playing the main character, Harvey Milk was the first openly gay politician. He spent his life fighting for change in the gay community. Sadly he was murdered just for living his life freely. Now there's a renewed interest in Mr. Harvey Milk's life. We must never forget those who fought for change and equal rights in our LGBT communities. We must never forget the road traveled. "Milk", the movie is a "must see", a wonderful piece of work. Madame Claims That Will Smith Is Gay?

According to a former Hollywood Madame, Mr. Will Smith is gay. She claims that Will employed two male hookers and fourteen "ladies of the night". The Madame continued saying that she needed to assure Will that this information would remain on the "down-low". However this is no surprise to many, as for years we've heard that Will and Jada, his wife, have this kind of relationship.
| If Will likes to play with men, this does not make him gay, this kind of act would make him bi-sexual. | ![]() |
| His close buddy, Tom Cruise, has lived with this rumor for years. The Madame continued, "Once I convinced him (Will Smith) I could, (keep this private) he placed his order. It was for a man. I had 14 women working for me and two guys. You'd be surprised at how many Hollywood stars requested the services of the guys."
It just amazes me, the many Madame's, Pimps always promise to keep this information private, but for 15 minutes of fame, the discretion goes right out of the window. Perhaps contracts should be signed and if broken….but in order to press charges one would also put the spot light on what's been hidden. You read it here at GBMNews.com

I've also commented on how we as a people of color have not tapped into our rich culture and that we should use our seasoned actors, actresses, singer etc. in our entertainment productions. It's like there's one group of actors that are used in every film, its time to improve and change.

I think it's a wonderful, if Mr. Perry can make this happen, as we haven't seen the diva in a movie on the big screen in a long while.
