Just say no to Sharia law

This Saturday's London rally against Sharia law and all religious tyrannies should be huge. Millions of people are suffering at the hands of clerical regimes, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters in countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran. Sadly, the turn out in Hyde Park will probably be quite small. This is odd. Most liberals and left-wingers would protest loud and strong if these persecutions were perpetrated by a western regime or by Christian fundamentalists. But they get squeamish when it comes to challenging human rights abuses done in the name of Islam.

Vigils Nationwide for Jorge Lopez Mercado

Since the burnt and dismembered remains of 19-year-old Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado were discovered in Puerto Rico, there has been an outcry and expressions of outrage at his murder. Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities in Mercado's island home, as well as across the nation, have increased their calls not only for justice to be done when the perpetrator is caught, but that the provisions of the hate crime legislation, which is only given lip service; be strengthened.

Now that the elections are over and Mayor Bloomberg has retained his office, the newly established commission on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) homeless youth is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, Nov 18. When Bloomberg, announced at the Ali Forney Center's (AFC) annual fundraiser on Oct 5 that he had established a commission to look into and address the plight of the city's homeless LGBT youth, to many in the audience, it was a surprise, many others wondered if it was another election year gimmick.

Malcolm X was bisexual. Get over it

October was Black History Month in Britain - a wonderful celebration of the huge, important and valuable contribution that black people have made to humanity and to popular culture. It is also worth celebrating that many leading black icons have been lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT), most notably the US black liberation hero Malcolm X.

Black, gay... and invisible

Black people need to stop treating homosexuality as if it's a white man's disease. We need to embrace the vibrant presence of gays and lesbians in our community and stop siding with bigots and racists.Over the past few weeks the homophobic murder of Ian Baynham in Trafalgar Square and the assault on PC James Parkes in Liverpool have shocked the gay community. Every anti-gay opinion adds strength to their attackers and supports other gay bashers.

To the Archbishop of Canterbury and primates of the Anglican Communion

I am writing to you to call on the Church of England and the wider Anglican community to condemn Uganda's proposed anti-homosexuality bill, which will make gay relations between disabled people and those under 18 a capital offence. "Carnal knowledge against the order of nature" – as homosexuality is termed in Ugandan law – is already punishable with life imprisonment. However, if passed, the new bill will widen the scope, including promoting homosexuality, aiding and abetting homosexuality and keeping a house "for purposes of homosexuality". This means that the relatives and friends of gay couples could face execution if they allow them to stay in their homes.

Providence exhibit examines achievements of gay black men

PROVIDENCE — For nearly a century, gay black men have contributed to the state’s political, academic and cultural life. But their efforts haven’t always been recognized. “People always ask me, ‘Have things gotten better for you, the blacks?’ ” said author James Baldwin at a 1985 reading at the First Baptist Church in Providence. “I survived it. That’s the best I can say.”

South Africa welcomes gay tourists while homophobic violence persists

Travel companies inviting gay and lesbian travellers to "paint the town pink" and claiming that South Africa has some of the most enlightened human rights policies in the world aren't technically wrong — but the push to attract gays from abroad stands in sharp contrast to the violence suffered by homos in that country. In reality South Africa is divided into two different worlds, separated by ethnicity, money and geography, with one of the highest HIV-infection rates in the world.

Stalwarts of the LGBT community honored at SAGE Annual Awards Gala

(New York, NY) - When Rosita Libre de Marulanda had wheeled herself into the center of the room and stopped, she was an image of aloneness: diminutive, reduced, and ringed by hundreds of people, uncannily all with their backs to her, a dark wall of suits, none taking any notice of her; yet, the one thing standing out, the red flower in her hair. As if on cue, two young men dressed in suits came over, spoke with her briefly, and left her again in her aloneness.

The Great Deception: The Myth of a Non-Homosexual Africa

During the recent Synod of African Bishops in Rome, it appears the issue of homosexuality in Africa assumed some major significance. Archbishop Robert Sarah, Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, in a session during the synod, suggested that a materialistic ideology was being imposed on African countries from the West, bringing with it a host of evils including abortion, artificial contraception and the legitimization of homosexuality. He described it as a "lethal ideology" and "contrary to African culture."

Three years ago, in Colorado, the congregation he grew up in dismissed him when he spoke up about his sexual orientation.
