Oakland Indie Awards

The First Annual Oakland Indie Awards will be held on May 4, 2007, from 5:30-8:00pm in Oakland's Rotunda Building at 300 Frank Ogawa Plaza,California. More than a dozen awards will be handed out in eight categories ranging from most inspiring new business or artist to local environmental hero.

The Indie Awards celebrate the spirit and impact of Oakland's independent businesses and artists. Several Oakland-based wineries, restaurants, and chocolatiers are donating their specialties for the event."The community support for the event has been overwhelming". This event will also unveil the Oakland Online Marketplace, a new e-commerce website which makes it easy to shop online with Oakland's independent businesses and artists.

“Stand by Me:” A Celebration of African-American Spirituals and Black Gospel Music

(New Orleans)—The combined choirs of Loyola University, Xavier University, and the New Orleans Black Chorale will perform Stand by Me, a celebration of African American Spirituals and Black Gospel Music, on Sunday, April 29, 2007, at 7:30 p.m., in Loyola’s Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

This spirit-filled work, written and arranged by Stephen Lee, was originally presented in Orlando, Florida, shortly after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, at the American Music Therapy national convention. Lee created the work to provide a space for those in the gulf coast to grieve and express grief in the community through music. It will be recorded on April 22 in Ontario, Canada.
